Thank you as a noob to this site, ive been on many of forums just to get mad cuz people feel that thier opinion is the only one and that what ever a new person says they are wrong. Ive been a CERTIFIED mechanic for years now and i was simply giving an imput on something i used. Take it or leave it.
Well as far as too cool goes, it does get to a correct opperational temp. It way not be right in the middle but its not cold either.
When i bought my xy i too had a cracked rad. and like a dip i went trailing with it so. luckely i cought it soon and filled it. Ive heard stories of these 4.0 motors being bone dry and glowing red, and yet the head gasket did not blow nor did the head warp. i would get it taken care of though. Its not a complicated process at any means. on a scale 1-10 as being hard its about a 3.

what is the problem with it. what is it doing?
ok maaaaann..... Its a thread dont get that mad. i didnt insult anyone so chill out.
eeeewwh boy. i find this SO frustrating. why people feel the need to ridicule or belittle others in a forum is beyond me. i myself recently have asked a few questions regarding cooling and temp gauge ranges only to get so many differing answers and more over OPINIONS none of which were helpfull at all and i simply gave up here seeking advice elsewhere. way to go ..way to make a newb feel welcome..
BTW, i still havent gotten my cooling issue adressed.but now i sure do have a myriad of possible scenarios as to what may or may not be causing it.

So you would say replacing the radiator is fairly easy to do? I think im just going to get the OEM one for the fact that it will connect and bolt on with no problems. But i want to get the best Coolant i can for it. Any Advice on other radiators that hook up correctly would be awesome. I have a Leak at the bottom passenger side by the little drain valve.

i think its extremely easy. i just used an oem style. they have multiple row radiators and unless your xj is going to be a dedicated offroad vechicle i would go with oem, simply for the price. i got my rad for 70 bucks from napa. i would get an all metal, no plastic tanks they will crack.
Ive noticed allot of people talk about ways to keep your xj cooler. I was wondering what brands of coolant people are using. The reason for this is i recently replace my waterpump, thermostate and housing, and my radiator. I didnt buy anything special, just napa parts. The only thing that was dramatically changed was the type of coolant i used. I work for mazda so i used what we had here. Now the type i used is a vehichle specific coolant, its for later model Tributes/Escape and B series/Ranger trucks. With this coolant in my xj it stays conciderably cooler. I can trail with my a/c on and it barely get to the half way point. Around town or in traffic i stay around the 1/4 mark with the a/c on. If anyone is haveing problems with cooling i would suggest trying this coolant.
Premium gold is what its called. This has a bittering agent in it. It has a protectant in it for the metals. It helps prevent rust and corrosion. I noticed when i flushed out the xj there were some rust particals and other gunk that this coolant helps protect against. It is a little more on the expensive side like 30 bucks for a gallon but its well worth it.
Hope this helps someone out, its worked beautifully for me.

That's way too cold IMO. The engine never reaches is optimal operating temp.

If your engine isn't reaching operating temp its time to put a new thermostat in. Its really hard to have too good of a cooling system in a such a small engine compartment with such a large motor and small radiator. In any case if its not getting to operating temp you probably have a defective thermostat or seized fan clutch
Going by 1/4 or 1/2 gauge is completely useless from one Jeep to another. My 1/4 may be 210 and yours may be 160 so if you want an accurate temp you really need an aftermarket gauge. At the same time if your jeep has been running at the halfway mark for years and is now running higher or lower that is a good indication that something has changed. (Stuck open or closed thermostat, plugged radiator failing or failing fan clutch)

My buddies was overheating pretty bad so he go some of those louvers and they helped his out quite a bit

It's the same as Motorcraft Premium Gold Coolant which is the same as Zerex G-05.
According to their site.
This coolant is a pre-diluted solution of 50 percent coolant and 50 percent distilled water, so you don't have to top it off with water when you add it to your engine's coolant reservoir. The coolant is ethylene glycol-based and may be used in gasoline and diesel engines
Ford recommends that you use the same Motorcraft coolant with which your vehicle was equipped when it was manufactured. If your vehicle came with one of Motorcraft's other coolants, do not use the Premium Gold coolant. You should use Premium Gold coolant only if your vehicle was originally equipped with it.
OP Hope you did a complete flush of the old coolant before you started to pour this super coolant that makes your jeep run way below the optimal operating temp
