I am also interested in this. I have a 96 xj with the stock 8.25, I have the same question as is what is needed to swap in the 29 spline axle shafts and locker. Let me know if you get this done and also let me know all the parts needed thanks.

another thing to remember there isnt alot of lunchbox lockers for the 29 spline. The only one i know of fir sure is Powertrax. Loc-Rite doesnt make a 29 spline 8.25 locker

29spl. 8.25 isn't quite as strong as a D44 but it's still a good axle. The 44 probably has way more aftermarket support though.
Taken from Jeephorizons:
Chrysler 8.25 - 29 spline, 1.21" diameter shafts, 8.25" ring gear, 3" axle tube
Dana 44 non c-clip - 30 spline, 1.31" diameter shafts, 8.5" ring gear, 2.75" axle tube

and the shaft size on the 44 is a decent bit thicker than the 29spline.

Depending on what size tires you plan on running you could get a set of yukon axles and with a lunchbox the 8.25 shouldn't be of any concern. The weak link will then be the d30 up front

..lol
