i dont believe the chrysler came with 27 spline in the '97+ years.... you should have the 29, which i have in my '98

I am also interested in this. I have a 96 xj with the stock 8.25, I have the same question as is what is needed to swap in the 29 spline axle shafts and locker. Let me know if you get this done and also let me know all the parts needed thanks.

How so? The 27 spline is still stronger than the D35. The 29 spline is equal to Dana 44.

29spl. 8.25 isn't quite as strong as a D44 but it's still a good axle. The 44 probably has way more aftermarket support though.

Taken from Jeephorizons:

Chrysler 8.25 - 29 spline, 1.21" diameter shafts, 8.25" ring gear, 3" axle tube

Dana 44 non c-clip - 30 spline, 1.31" diameter shafts, 8.5" ring gear, 2.75" axle tube

its only stronger in tube thickness, and a little larger ring gear. the 27spline has slightly smaller axles than the d35.

and the shaft size on the 44 is a decent bit thicker than the 29spline.

Aussie makes a locker for the 29 spline. Also, I vaguely recall my carrier having 29 stamped into the back of it but cannot be certain.

Depending on what size tires you plan on running you could get a set of yukon axles and with a lunchbox the 8.25 shouldn't be of any concern. The weak link will then be the d30 up front
