Chryco 8.25 shaft swap
tried search and got nothin, so ill ask here.
right now i have a 27 spline 8.25 in my XJ, but i have a pile of 29 spline parts. so could i put the 29 spline shafts in the 27 spline housing if i have all the internals? was also gonna do bearings, seals and a locker all at the same time.

My understanding of this is that you have to change the carrier because the openings for the axle shafts are different sizes, but old research memory might be hazy
I personally see no issue with the 27 spline, ive run it locked with 35's and now 33's with no ill effects.

TheJerm is correct, You CAN run 29 spline axles in a 27 spline housing. A 29 spline carrier and spidergears / lunchbox/full locker must be used.
The ring gear and pinion can be reused if you arent doing a gear change.

Yes, you will need a new 29 spline carrier. I did this swap a couple months ago, and replaced the 27 spline carrier with a Detroit locker 29 spline carrier. A normal 29 spline carrier with spider gears is hard to find and expensive brand new. So your best bet is to do what I did and be done with it. Also, you can re gear the same carrier from a 3.55 to a 4.88 if you choose, which you mine as well since you're gonna have to spend the time or cash to reset the gears anyways. Another good option, is to pick up a ford 8.8. It's a way better axle!!
