Default "cheap gearing" questions/ideas

I'm running 33's on stock 3.55 gears and it works ok on the trail but isn't much fun on the highway, so I'm working on a plan and have some questions:

4.10's would get me close to stock gearing. I found a 8.8 on craigslist already converted to spring-over with 4.10s. The guy had it under a YJ. Do you think the perches are the right width? Anyone know how much narrower the 8.8 is? I asked the guy to measure it for me, but he isn't being much help.

For the front, I just need a d30 out of a 4 banger so it has 4.10s. I found one off an xj, but it is CAD. I have extra 3.07 and 3.55 axles, will the shafts fit? I can't find the seal kit I need online, either. The same dude with the 8.8 has a d30 out of his yj that has chromoly shafts and the non cad conversion. will all the parts interchange?

thanks

The 8.8 will not bolt in. The spring perches won't line up and you'll have to move them. As for the front, stay away from the YJ dana 30, as you'll end up welding on new suspension brackets. I pulled axles out of a 4cyl. xj to get my 4.10 gears. If you are really looking for a bolt in option, keep your eyes on CL for 4 cyl. xj part outs. In terms of the CAD axles, you should be able to get the CAD kit with the seals and block off plate from quadratec. If they are from an XJ and have the 4.10 gears you want, it will work.

Oh, and yes, non-cad axle shafts will fit in the cad housing.

Ok thanks for the info.

Yeah i knew the yj axle wouldn't bolt in, but I was thinking I could buy it just for the chromoly shafts and non cad conversion kit to put into another xj CAD 4.10 axle. Don't really need the chromolys but he would take 250 or 300, which I think is a good buy(?) so I wanted to make sure the yj d30 shafts are the same as xj d30 shafts. hard to get all this stuff rolling around in my head in words haha.

x2, you could lock that thing so cheaply, since its a disconnect. I'd run a spool or lincoln lock on it.

that would work? anytime you were in 4x4 with the axle disconnected you would still be powering the driver's side tire....3wd. it would also spin that side constantly in 2wd. interesting thought though......

The only downside to the CAD axles is the smaller Ujoints. I thought about lincoln locking one until i found a cheap 97+ axle. The CAD axles are also known for being stronger that non-CAD
