Its not difficult just tedious sometimes. I wouldn't suggest selling the swr meter. Any time you change antenna, radio, or coax you should always check swr. Even if you used all the same equipment but in a different vehicle (xj or not) the swr needs to be verified a good.

The $40 swr meter from radio shack comes with complete instructions on how to tune your cb. You'll also need a short coax cable to use as a jumper from the meter to the cb. Radio shack should have that also , I got a 3' cable when I bought my meter.

For power wire I used an insulated (no picture sorry) 14g wire for both 12v + and - wires. Since the wire came in only black outer shielding I just used red electrical tape at the ends to distinguish +.
My first attempt was running the wires from the CB all the way to the battery with an in-line 5amp fuse on the + wire as close to the battery as I could get it. After experiencing a lot of "engine noise" I looked in all directions for help.
When I stumbled upon the CB shop near were I live I quickly stopped in to check it out. After disusing my issues with the tech he told me to run the power wires to the inside fuse panel. He then gave me a small "fuse adapter" or so he called it. Some guys like to jam a wire in the fuse slot and force the fuse over the wire. THIS IS NOT SAFE.
"FUSE ADAPTER"
"FUSE ADAPTER" with mini-blade type fuse installed.
Here is what it looks like installed in the interior fuse panel. Since I rerouted the wires from the battery to the interior fuse panel I have not had any "engine noise"
I also had some noise filters I purchased from Fry's Electronics and decided to put them on the wires....why not...couldn't hurt!!!
Once all was said and done I pulled out the SWR meter I purchased from Radio Shack, went to a large wide open area and began to tune the antenna to the radio. As mentioned above in another post I now have about a 10 mile range within the city. My Cobra 25 was tuned by the tech at the CB shop and is pushing 27watts output power which is almost quadruple the power it had out of the box.

I do agree that equipment instruction manuals do provide very good information for most applications. BUT as you know that with our XJs nothing comes simple and most of the time things do go according to plan.

I'm thinking some of the numbers here are a little on the BS side!FCC regulations on citizen bad dictate 4 watt max, so I doubt a cobra 25 put out 6.5 watts right out of the box. That would make cobra liable to fines from the FCC. I'm guessing it was new to you and had been modified by a PO.I personally have never had a NIB CB that put out what the specs say let alone more.
