Hello, I am just starting a lift project on a really nice 98 XJ limited that fell into my lap. The vehicle is not destined for rock crawling and disconnects, rather for trail worthiness in the context of volunteer search and rescue activity I am involved in.
After reading for hours, here and elsewhere, and going over hundreds of lift stories and detailed reports, I decided to get the following:
I have several questions I cannot find a definite answers for and hoping someone with experience could set me straight. I've never done this type of project before...
What is the likelihood a SYE would be required after the lift and does it by default also require a CV mod?
The RE kit does not come with spring shims - do I need to get shims?
Some people said they needed an adjustable track bar to improve steering. Is this unavoidable?
Can I just mount 31x10.5R15 on my stock 98 limited rims, or will I have a rubbing/fitting issue that requires different wheels or at least spacers? A lot of people are talking about back space clearance, but I have no idea what it is about...
Thanks for all your help... I just want to get it right the first time and collect all the necessary parts upfront...

- Rubicon Express RE6025 3.5" Super-Ride w/rear springs - (great discount @ 4WD)
- Bilstein 5100 shocks all around
- RE Steering stabilizer
- 31-10.5R15 tires (BFG ATs)

Just some notes from my install of a 3" Rusty's lift on my 98.
The trac-bar is a pretty good idea, my axle was off center an inch or two after the lift, but as you have probably noticed, it seems everyone has a little different experience. Same with the SYE, I have not finished everything on mine so I have not done one yet. I did have some pretty bad vibes after the lift but a 1" drop of the crossmember took care of that.
The tires... Now that's something I know will fit on your wheels since they are the same tires I went with on some TJ Canyon wheels (15x8).
Just go for it, you may find there are a few things to change here and there, but that's part of the adventure I guess.
