I'm thinking of removing the interior carpet and just rhino lining the floor pan of the jeep. My carpet isn't the worst I've ever seen but it is almost 20 years old. Are there any disadvantages to doing this?

The carpet does a lot for sound insulation. The rhino lining will make up for some of that, but it's going to be louder.

Besides the loss of sound insulation the only thing I can think of is the loss of water retention that helps promote rusted out floor pans. What fun would it be if you never have the privilege of replacing the floor pans in your xj? Just kidding, no offense intended.

My Laredo came without carpet and only has rubber matting. The Rhino lining should be fine just touch up any potential rust areas prior to applying the Rhino lining.

Heat...there's a ton of heat underneath these beasts above the catalytic converter in particular. If you're driving it only in the Winter no big deal, but carpeting and pad act as a pretty good insulator in the Summer.

Is it dirty or worn out?

Mine was dirty, I took the seats out and pulled out the carpet, sprinkled some dry laundry detergent on it, got it wet and lightly brushed it, and then pressure washed it. It's like new now.
