so ive been youtube surfing finding some videos of guys throwing cams in the 4 liter. wondering if anyones got some time to tell me about their setup. my xj is a 99 and im having trouble finding a kit for it. any info is helpful thanks

Comp Cams has kits. I think for a little under $500 you get roller lifters, stiffer valve springs, and of course the cam.

I ran the comp cam for a couple of years until a lifter collapsed and wiped the lobe. Swapped in another motor pending a stroker build on the first one. My advice, if you do it, make sure your oil journals in your engine all flow well and there's no clogs, follow the break in procedure, and get stiffer valve springs.

When you swapped the cam did you get the whole comp cam kit like the previous poster had suggested or did you just run a cam? I'm curious if the springs in the kit are strong enough or if someone is bound to run into your problem again. i know these a re literally tractor motors out of the 60's but every little bit helps and cams are probably the biggest producers short of super/turbo charging, stroker rebuild or dun dun dun nitrous. (which i wonder if anyone has successfully run nitrous Oxide in a 4.0)

Yeah they've got a couple different cams but sucks for
The 99 they charge 50 bucks for cause it has
To be special ground but I'm just lookin for someone
Who's got a nice running setup to give a couple pointers

dont know how they do it there but in IL alll they do is scan it make sure you have completed enough of the monitors and you are done.since mine is a 96 i can squeek by w/ 2 "not ready "... do they still use a sniffer on all cars?

Let's not let this thread turn into a "smog" thread.

I was just warning the OP about emissions testing as a cammed motor might not pass. NY is a bit of a "nanny state".

Call comp cams and tell them you want more power but have to pass smog,They should be able to take care of you.

I got the whole kit which did NOT include springs. It included the cam, lifters, and timing set. And they are NOT rollers... they are flat tappet

Thank for clearing that up. Knowing what you know now what would you have done differently? Springs obviusly but would you run a comp cam again?
