CAD MOD 1989 Cherokee
I can’t get my 89 Cherokee to go into 4wd. I’m pretty sure it’s a vacuum issue with the CAD. I checked out a great video by BleepinJeep on modifying it to keep the fork locked over. I just don’t understand how the transfer case lever will work if this is done. Will I still be able to run in 2wd without it chirping the tires? Will it still function in 4wd hi and low??? Also, in the video it shows the capping of the vacuum lines under the hood, but not under the Jeep. I’m assuming that they can be capped on the hard lines underneath?? I’m on a tight budget so specifically interested in the mod. I’m new to this so please dumb it down for me👍

Well i probably should have done it, but i never capped the hose lines.
As for the mod, i ended up replacing the passenger side from a two piece axle to a one by upgrading the axle shaft from a younger model jeep.
If the transfer case is on 2wd, it will be in 2wd. If it is in 4low or 4hi then the engine power will distributed to both the front and rear differential by the transfer case.
There are older videos from youtube showing how differentials, driveline, and transfer case how they work.

you will not even notice it done. everything will function as normal. just won't separate the axle shaft on that side, which jeep says will net you better gas mileage. albeit, very nominal.
the mod you talk about will give you assurance that it will be in four wheel drive, when you need it.

Just do the mod with what you've got and go enjoy it.
If you must know, the LEVER engages the transfer case.
Then a little crappy switch on the transfer case sends vacuum through 14 miles of vacuum hoses to a poorly designed and functioning front axle shift motor to engage the passenger side axle. Unreliable when new........
