I am all the way on the other side of the country in MA.... I would much rather rebuild it or get a reman than just a strait up used one with unknown history. My AW4 worked just fine until I put bigger tires on and then the problem started.

first of all, i have rebuilt several transmissions, mostly GM 1 or 2 aw4's 3 or 4 42re's. not knowing your mechanical ability i just want to warn you transmissions are nasty stinky buggers full surprises, 1 or 2 specialty tools is not the name for it more like 10 or 15 =). not to discurage you or anything because everybody has to start somewhere, the best way to do is with help from someone that has done it serveral times, make sure u have a micrometer and look into the atsg books pricey but gives you everything you need to know torque specs and will tell you the tools you need.

i really like your quote BTW, I like to think I am fairly compitent when it comes to mechanics. Name a part on an XJ and chances are I personally have removed it, rebuilt it, repaired, replaced it, modified it, or serviced it. I am well aware that automatic transmissions the single most complicated part of any car or jeep on the road which is why I am asking before jumping in only to find out I have no idea what I am doing and end up with a transmission in pieces that I cant put back together. I am willing to learn anything so long as i dont start off in over my head
