Sup fellow Jeepers! First off I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right section. I have a 94 G.C. with the 42RE tranny and full time 4x4. The tranny took a dump and I don't like the full time 4x4. I'm thinking of swapping the tranny for an AW4 and a 231 transfer case. Now I've heard that it's a pain in the neck doing this swap, almost impossible. Has anybody done this swap before, or have any information as to how to go by doing this? I've done some digging but haven't found any solid info. Appreciate any help, thanx.

 

The zj engines are interchangeable with the XJs so mounting the tranny to the engine shouldn't be a problem.

What do you mean you don't like the full time 4WD?

It's invaluable in the wintertime.

 

AW4 trans was standard in the 1993 ZJ.....

 

It's not the engine connecting to the aw4 that zj have issue, it's more the shift linkage and crossmember, so if the OP has decent fab skills, it's possible.

Look on to naxja as I believe there was a guy who was doing the swap and doing a write up with it.
