I bought a 94 2wd xj with the 4.0 the other day to have a backup motor for my 95. Transmission is supposedly bad but I have had the motor running on starter fluid here and there. I pulled the old tank down after trying to direct wire the fuel pump to see if it was fried or not. After no luck I knew I needed to pull down my old tank for general inspection inside especially since I knew this thing had been sitting a good while. Found two rust holes about a inch in diameter and at that point I didnt bother even looking in the tank, pushed it back under the jeep for now. With what I am going to be using this thing for im not going to need alot of fuel capacity so I got to thinking about if I felt like buying a new tank and pump and I decided I didnt in the end. I am considering buying a boat tank and finding a in-line high pressure fuel pump like we had done to my step dads c10 years ago. Has anyone else done this? Any advice is appreciated looking forward to it!
Forgot to mention planning on removing the doors and fenders along with the back hatch. It is going to used at my dads house to clean up the woods in the back and after that its just going to be used as a sxs until the motor is needed. The interior is trashed from the windsheild and left rear window being busted out for years so carpet will be ripped out and seats will be recovered in something that wont retain water.

Reason: Forgot
The 94 returns unused fuel to the tank so you have to direct return fuel from the regulator into the tank. Also you will need a 40 to 50 psi in line pump or you will not make enough pressure to open injectors

Thank you@bluejeep2001 . For anyone interested what I ended up doing was going to pull a part and getting a high pressure fuel pump off of a 1987 F150 with the 5.0. Its just a inline pump that sits on the frame rail. I wired it up with the pigtail from my original pump then ziptied the pump up to the body. From there I ran some gas hose off of the pump into a 5 gallon gas can I have thats sitting in the back of the xj. I ended up drilling 2 holes to run the sending and return line into the cab to the go inside of the gas can. Runs great, idles amazing. Just have to find a way to fasten the can for now until I find a better option. Was considering taking a 5 gallon bucket with a spout and drilling 2 holes into the lower side to run the gas lines into and then using rtv to seal it from the outside though im not sure if it would last.
A 5 gallon pail will not be strong enough and the gas will certainly be hard on the rtv. If you had a crash the lit would certainly pop off. And rtv doesn’t stick well to plastic typically. You should be able to get some threaded barbs that you could attach to the cap in the lid. Also, you can just use some of that metal strapping with holes and some self tapping screws in the rear since you don’t have to worry about putting a screw into your original gas tank.
