hey guys, been owning cherokees for 12yrs now, and here's my best results:
loose clutch fan- huge draw and biggest power and mileage gain
improve intake to closest to outside air
tb spacer if you're light on peddle (make one from 1" Oak or Comatex)
improve exhaust but keep back pressure, not wide open
move IAT sensor off intake to the box or intake setup, just off intake itself
160 thermostat
gasket match intake ports to head ports, easy but awesome results
Start with this stuff. not very costly at all and trust me, on 39.5 stock xj axles with auto trans 3.54 ratios, biggest jeep yet, and my mileage with all this stuff done is still pushin 17ish with easy on peddle most of time. I work on nothin but cherokees for 12 years now so this is best results. Hope this will help you out. God Bless You.

The biggest things to improve fuel economy on an XJ:
- Don't drive like it's a race car or a Buick going to church
- Keep it in the power band ("Power" switch if you have one or don't shift when the stupid light comes on in the manuals)
- Lose weight (both you and your Jeep)
- Improve aerodynamics
- Keep up to date on all tuneup gear
- Keep engine clean
- Use reputable fuel with good detergents, though you may have luck with ethanol vs. non-ethanol (some people report different results)
- Tires at appropriate pressure
- Gear appropriately for transmission, tire, and weight combo (eg. deeper gears when towing will help)
- Calculate MPG properly
Everything else is just a bit of hacking that can take years to break even on. If you really want fuel economy drop in a diesel that will do 30 MPG.
Great idea, make sure to run one that can draw enough air such as the Taurus fan
Maybe if you have a carbeurated or TBI engine... does nothing on MPFI
These are best paired up. Engines are air pumps. Bored TB + actual CAI like a cowl "snorkel" + less restrictive filter, then do 2.5" pipe the whole way back with a high flow cat & muffler without stupid crush bends.
Helps only in ambient warm weather. In the winter the IAT reads "too close" to the real temperature and you burn a lot more fuel.
Nothing to do with fuel economy... Actually can cause problems as the engine will have a hard time maintaining operating temperature.

Haha yeah. I'm reminded of the Mighty Car Mods episode where they bust the 'electric superchargers' being sold on eBay, and conclude that 1) You'd see more power gain if you just hit the toilet and dropped the kids off at the pool before going out, and 2) Leaf blowers were more effective

First time I seen one of those on ebay I laughed for about 5 mins. "60hp gain" yea... sure. About as funny as the magnets on your fuel line to align all the electrons in the gas, makes is burn better. Lmao.
We need to band together and come up with one, make some dough.

You're right, we should. DIY Turbo kit, all you need is some pinwheels from your neighbors lawn and metal bowls from the camping store or mil surplus.
