Default Backspacing? Please explain!

Wanting new wheels for my cherokee, found some nice white steelies from pro comp that I want and are the right size, and it says they have 3.75" backspacing. What exactly does that mean? and will a wider wheel then my stock ones make the tires or wheels rub on any suspension components? (Pretty noob dealing with tires and wheels and their respective sizes.. sorry.)

backsapcing is the distance from the inside lip of the wheel to the surface that contacts the rotor or brake drum. The lower the number the farther out your wheels will be. This is needed when running a taller/wider tire.

Im running 3.75" backspacing on my 12" wheels and they stick out real wide...love it tho...no rubs with the 32x11.5's i got on it, with PLENTY of room to spare for wider tires.

Great, thanks guys. I want to run some 10" wide 15" wheels, throw some 31's on there. Think that'll be alright with my 3" lift?

ideally, you want your rims to be about 3-4 inches narrower than your tires.
so a 12.5 wide tire is best suited to an 8 inch wide rim. 10.5 also fits nice on an 8 inch rim, but they would be more prone to losing a bead when aired down if mounted on a 10 inch wide rim.

personally, i like the 3.75 bs for most applications.
