Good cheap axles will require pulling from junkyard trucks and fabrication.
Good bolt in axles will require a fat wallet and a shiny black card, possibly selling your soul to Dynatrac or Currie.

If it has ABS the axle is a D35 if not you have a C8.25 29 splines.
The other questions: 'depends'. Size of tire, how and where you will be drive, if you will add lockers, etc.

I have a D35 with 31 MT. I'm waiting to replace my rear axle to start the process of regear, lock, put larger tires. Seldom I will be larger than 33 and I don't do rocks, so an C8.25 is good enough for me.

It is my personal educated opinion that an 8.8 is stronger than an XJ 44...

C-clip eliminator and chromo shafts and bet you can't break it.

It's in your state, reasonably priced, and a direct bolt in.

I'm looking to run at least 35's and I plan to mud and trail it pretty hard, even if I don't Change out the axle I think it might be worth re-gearing and adding lockers/LSD

A guy here in town(Denver) sets up Ford 8.8s for Jeeps for $450 bucks with stock gears up to 4.10s and factory limited slip. Charges more for 4.56 and up.
I got the 8.8 with 4.10s and factory limited slip setup for my XJ and love it. All I had to do was remove the dana 35 and install the 8.8 amd he even delivered it. I had to use some spacers to use factory wheels and don't trust the c-clips, but that will all change with a super 88 kit and new wheels.
It's all based on your budget and your preference and do your homework!

X2 - 8.8 all day long over an XJ 44

People do the XJ44 cause its a little easier on the wallet, but its not the BEST option...

So it would cost $900 if I wanted to do both axles??? And if I get the 6.5" rough country x-flex lift kit he could still set it up for that???
