If you are doing serious offroading then 38" tires are Dana 60 territory in my opinion. At the very least you will need a Dana 44 front with trusses, and chromoly axles. For the rear a 31 spline Ford 8.8 with chromoly shafts and a stronger carrier may get you by but a 1 ton axle like a Ford 10.5, GM 14 bolt, Dana 70 or Dana 80 would be better. If you can do fab work the best thing to do is find a wrecked Ford Superduty for cheap and use the axles from it, they can handle 38s under an XJ no problem.

Someone on a group from FB asked the same question except 37's. One reply was to gusset, truss, chromoly sleeves and chromoly axles.
So 2 questions: If you do all that work to a D30, what will it cost?
If you swap in a D60 and keep it full width, pay someone to do the fab work and keep the 4.10 gears (Im thinking there isn't a stock locker), what will that cost?
