I bought my gears to do a gear swap. After my gears got in i found a local guy that has D30 with 4.88 gears in it already. I would just have to use my current axle shafts. He is asking $150 for it. Would I be stupid to pass this up and save the cost of the gear install and sell or send back the new front gears I already got?

 

For $150 I'm willing to bet there's something wrong with that axle.

 

From what he said, it came on the Jeep TJ he bought. He replaced it with a D30 with 3.55 gears. He is putting a 4bt into his TJ. It currently has some afteramarket axle shafts is why he is keeping the axles.

 

If it came out of a tj than its a low pinion axle

Yeah, I have a lp currently in my 2000 XJ. I am just looking at this as saving some money. I can do the front swap my self.

 

I'm still wry about an axle that's been geared for $150. Either a hell of a deal or somebody tryin to dump their problem onto you

 

Open the housing clean the gears and check the pattern. A lot of DIY R&P installs go cheap and end up as scrap.

If your buying an axle already geared be ready to check backlash, pinion bearing preload, and the pattern just for security
