I've had my Jeep for a while now and have many upgrades on it already. My next upgrade would be diff gears since I still have the stock ones in, have 155k on the truck, lifted 4" with almost 33"s on it. Im thinking of 4.56 gears to bring it back to more of that stock feeling, like the truck had SOME power ! lol, So first off, does that sound like the right route ? Secondly, what is the difference between dana 30, dana 40, dana 44 ?? I have no idea what that means !!! If someone can explain that to me that would be awesome. And If you replace your rear axle, why would you have to change out your front ? Im in the dark with all this but I want to do the best for my XJ. I dont go crazy wheelin or hardcore rubicon trail rock crawling, but moderate off-raoding and if I have to I want the truck to take a beating. Thanks guys

Not trying to be mean but I'm guessing you have not done much work on the XJ since you don't know what differ axle sizes are.
There is no Dana 40 axle I don't think. The "Dana's" are just different axles made for different resone's and the 35 and 44 numbers are just explaining different axles made by Dana.
Post a picture of the back end of your jeep so we can tell you what read end you have. If you happen to have a Dana 35 then your going to need to swap it out before you do any type of work on it like gears.
For gearing go to a gearing chart and look it uP on what your going to need.
Good luck

Since you have a 2000, you either have ABS and the D35(junk) or the C8.25 29 spline. If its the D35 I would sway in a D44/C8.25 29 spline and regear that as I would never put money into a D35 IMHO.
4.56's are what I would run auto or manual. I loved 4.56's with 33's, wish I would have done 4.88's for when I later whent to 35's. I belive in over gearing...
You have to regear the front and rear diff because they need to turn at the same rate of speed or it will granade your TC. The gears in the diff need to be the same ration front and back. No point in doing one diff on a 4x4...
Also with your questions I would recomend having a shop do the gears as setting them up incorrectly can cost more then new gear sets and 90w. It needs to be done correctly.
