not all of the jeeps took gear lube. some did come with atf, your trans might not have been original. atf will make the trans shift smoother but the gear lube will quiet the trans down if its making any noise. you can run either.

Synchromesh will damage the synchros and other parts sure to the chemical compounds.
You should be putting 10w30 or the recommended fluid.
Do NOT use synchromesh.

I had such a problem trying to find out the correct fluid for my ax15 about a month or two ago, I searched all over the internet and couldnt find a clear response, and evyone said something different. I read somewere that syncromesh is great, except that it is gl-5 and it will wear away at bronze bushings in the transmission. Mopar has a fluid that is still gl-3 which is what SOME of them took. I never found a clear answer and used a pennzoil syncromesh I think, or the recomended weight of gear oil... I cant rember anymore. But tjats what I could gather that seemed reliable, call your local dodge/ jeep dealership would probly be your best bet or even a reputable transmission shop.

I had the same concerns back when I was fixing up my old VW bus. After many hours of research, it turns out modern GL5 will not actually corrode or wear bronze bushings more than GL4 (factory recommendation for my bus). I filled it up with GL5, daily drove that for 2 years. Still shifted like new when I sold it.
