Gota be done at a shop won't be to much tho check to see if they are able to do mandrle bends if so go there if not its ok...you cam pm gee ohh dee and see where he got his at
The tip changes the tone of the exhaust to an extent...usually making it much more tame/calm sounding! But it can work the other way as well...turndowns usually a lot cheaper to...
The turndown won't change sound since its not truely a tip...and all because its "turned down" to the ground it echos I guess you could say?

I like mine much better with the turndown vs the tailpipe. Mine dumps right in front of the axle..no heat issues what so ever!
Your talking about the down pipe that is part of the cross-over ...
Should the cross-over pipe be mandrel bent? The existing one was once repaired has a sharp 90 deg. at the bottom of the cross-over ..
Shows the APN header uses a 2 1/4" exit ...
Your trying to give the exhaust a little more breathing room?
I found a Walker Exhaust 55277 ... appears to be 2.25 inch ... factory compressed pipe ..

I don't think any aftermarket header offers a 2.5" collector..most have a 2.25"..The walker evans crossover/s-pipe/downpipe...same ****...is trash! Its 2.25" crush bent...Our stock is 2.25" mandrel bent...with a dent lol.

The walker evans won't be an improvement at all. I think its actually a step backwards! You need to get a custom downpipe made! 2.5" mandrel bent! Anyway can make it for ya!

Part of the exhaust, from age and appearance appears to be OE exhaust ... is made from stainless ... The crossover appears extra thick where it crosses over and smooth where it bends, did not appear to have any crush marks that you would notice with aftermarkets such as Walker, etc.

I think at least some of the OE exhausts were stainless ... Several years ago one shop dumped the old style Cat (the type that can be re-beaded and re-used) and replaced it with the updated honeycomb version ... Stainless was mentioned at several shops ... sometimes by the welder who said it was more difficult to weld on .. .. One muffler shop owner mentioned something about the XJ tailpipe being stainless did not require replacement, still had lots of useful life left ..

Stock exhaust is 2.25 right?
Would it be better just to get a 2.25 muffler to bolt on to the cat or get a larger size and get a pipe that goes from 2.25 to 2.5? I'm not planning on going 2.5 from the header back because the cat will still restrict it.
Actually I can get a muffler with a 2.25 inlet and a 2.5outlet...

just trying to clarify.
I was inquiring about the difference between running turndown pipe at end or run the exhaust pipe from the muff out the back with no bend at end. I will not be using a tip to make look fancy. im assuming adding a tip will change sound.
But will bending the end as apposed to straight pipe out the back change tone/sound? louder lower higher?
you kind of contradict yourself there?
just trying to clarify.

Anyhow yes a tailpipe will quiet the exhaust sound down even without a tip. No difference really of having the tailpipe bent down vs straight out...stock exhausts have theres turned down...
A turndown is a pipe thats turned down right after the muffler usually.
