Ive just installed my exhaust, cut off cat, went up to 2 1/2 over the trans crossmember, into a thrush welded, then found some brand new sections of 3 1/2 inch out of the scrap yard pile, and went up to 3 1/2 directly after the muffler and out the back just like stock with a little turndown.... get drone also but i dont mind it one bit, sounds nice and mean , little loud but i like the sound if big pipes.... plus only 4$40.

Considering there was no catalyst left in the cat, just a little piece rattling around, and also its driven very little, i could give a crap less. Believe me, I DO know it will hinder performance a little as im not just a flipping backyard want to be mechanic, Ive been a certified chrysler technician for the last 7 years...

And don't talk about it on the forum. It's against the rules and we like this thread.

I've seen several posts on this thread recommending a high flow cat that was around $60. Where are you guys buying these? I'm in central NY. I've gotten prices from some of the local parts stores that are way higher. A univ. cat with no bung for the o2 runs $90!

My rig is a '99 with a stock 4.0 and 198k on the clock. It looks like the cat may have been replaced at some point and it has an OEM type muffler and tailpipe. I've put my hand over the tailpipe etc. to test it. It's OK, I guess. My milage isn't horrible and there's no rotten egg smell. It just seems a little doggy and I want a meaner sound.

Like alot of guys, I'm on a really tight budget. I think I'll try ditching the grandma muffler 1st., before I spend so much to R&R the cat. So, what are your suggestions for a muffler & pipe that will flow & sound better? I had a glasspack on my old YJ and it sounded like a tractor. I really don't want that again.

Thanks for your help!

Default Dumb Luck and Dumber kid

I was making a delivery at a little, mom & pop grocery and ran into a fellow Jeeper. While I was in the middle of describing my search for a good, cheap exhaust the kid sweeping the floors says "I got a muffler I'll sell ya!" OK, I'll be polite. I asked him what he has. "It's a Magna-something... hang on it's in my car." Holy Crap! He hands me a brand new, in the box, warranty card and decal too, MagnaFlow muffler! How much? Here it comes... "I forgot what I paid, how's $25 sound?" Uh, like your a moron... I mean, great!

So, thanks to the rampant drug problems of today's youth, I now have a shiny, new, $80, stainless muffler to put on my XJ tomorrow.
