Ok... I have a few questions about getting this exhaust setup complete. 98 XJ, 4.0, AW4. Currently installed: 99+ intake, bored TB, APN header. Currently waiting to be installed: magnaflow muffler and 2.5" mandrel bent TP from performance curve. (Also have a fairly new cat installed... we'll get to that in the later part).
I want to put all 2.5" mandrel bent pipe from the collector back. I plan on getting the mandrel bends in a kit from somewhere like Summit (other source suggestions welcome). I also have access to someone with great welding ability and all the proper equipment for the price of a six pack.
What do I need to connect the 2.25" collector to a 2.5" downpipe? Should I weld everything together, or use some clamps? I would like to make it somewhat modular using clamps in a couple of places to remove sections for maintenance. I have seen a band-type clamp that looks ideal, but I cannot remember what it is called. Is flexpipe a good preventative measure somewhere on the downpipe? My goal is to have this tucked up tight to the underbody above the rail.
One consideration is that this is a 2wd that will get a 4x4 conversion at some point. Should I just follow the stock setup for the downpipe? I don't want to interfere with the front DS when it is installed.
As for the cat, it is a 2.25" OEM replacement about 1.5 years old with all of 1500 miles on it. Should I replace this at the same time or just roll with it?
Sorry for the long winded questions! Thanks in advance!

That band type clamp you speak of is called a band clamp lol. I have one on my exhaust and it's awesome. Seals as good as a weld and you can still take it apart if needed. And check out www.performance-curve.com for mandrel bent pipe.

If you're planning on manifold back I'd start with the APN header, cheap, steel, great quality and I believe a lifetime warranty. For the down pipe someone else is going to have to chime in. You could just go with a rockauto DP for cheap but I bet someone else knows of a 2.5 inch DP here. Get a magna flow hi flow cat and performance curves 2.5 ich cat back with the flow master 44.
Saturday I bought a Flowmaster cat from O'Reilly's only to discover that the existing cat has an oxygen sensor in it and the new cat didn't provide for that. Also, the exit on the new cat was 2.5" and the old one was 2.25" so that went back to O'Reilly's. Exit pipe size would not be a problem if I was doing a complete replacement but I was trying to get the cat replaced first because it rattles & that sounds crappy.
The system is in surprisingly good condition for being 15 years old. I replaced the loose u-clamps on the cat. Not having loose clamps bouncing on the pipe made it rattle less. Shocker that, right?
My son said he would not object to having a little more bark from the exhaust so I'm thinking about systems that are "not as quiet" as the OEM exhaust.

Well then go look for a cat-back system, performance curve or something like that would probably have em. I here walker stuff is pretty good, kinda stockish replacement many a bit better. Probably not too bad on the pocket either. Dunno though, my stock exhaust is still good, I think my mania is cracked but I haven't really looked yet...
