Im looking for a muffler cheap (perferably under 40, but I can cope with up to 100) that is quiet but has the deepest growl it can have. I want the best peformance gains I can get aswell, but im used to the stock mufflers performance so it isnt necessary, just preferred. Quiet but Mean. Like James Bond. I want my muffler to be like flipping James Bond.

Theres a muffler that has a baffle in it that stays closed under normal acceleration, but opens up at wot. There a little pricey though i think. I think magnaflow makes one.

No its possible. Im not an expert on exhaust so hopefully someone else with more knowledge will chime in. But from what ive read, magnaflow mufflers have a nice throaty tone w/o a drone. Im ordering one next week to put on my xj. That dynomax vt is designed to have a nice tone with absoutly no drone.

Read somewhere that the straight 6 engine doesn't have the qualities to produce much "growl" regardless of the muffler. This is mostly true. Whenever I go to a Jeep show I try to listen to as many XJs as posssible & question the drivers about their mufflers. Not too many out there that growl. I'm just looking for a decent quiet tone at idle and as little drone as possible on the highway.

Does higher flow rate through the muffler equal better performance? does it affect the engine by not having as much back pressure? If so, what does it do?

Mag flow and all others will be fine but complete straight pipe will suck your torque curve. But a higher flow rate cat and muffler will increase performance.
