Would it be a bad idea to run a 14" wide tire on a 8" wide rim?

 

I've ran 12.5" wide tires on a 7" rim with no problem, so a 14" wide tire on a 8" rim would only be a half inch more so i'd say you'd be fine.

Hey all I have a 98 XJ with a RE 5.5" lift and BFG 265/75r16 AT's on Mickey Thompson Classic II rims. My actual lift, as measured from the center of rim/axle to fender is 7 1/4" in front and 6 1/2" in rear. the tires are worn pretty good and currently measure 30" tall fully inflated, and the tread width is 8 3/4". Thats the actual width of the contact patch. Basically I have always had 15 inch rims on all of my wranglers, I want to go with something like a 33x12.50. I read that a 285/75 r16 is equal to a 33inch tall tire. IS anyone else running this size lift tire combo?? I was wondering if the 285/75r16 is the right size for me, meaning is it going to be wide enough, is this about as wide as I can go without wheel spacers? Will it be a similar width to a 33x12.50? I was wanting to get KM2's or something similar, this is a dd with occasional wheeling trips.

Just wanting to hear other guys advice on tire size for this combo with no fender trimming. Thanks.

My lift has been on there for several years at least and I think it rides great, it is the short arm with drop brackets for the front LCA's. Impressive street ride, flexes great on the trails.

 

also I was wondering what would be a good option to level out the rear, I basically need another 3/4". Plus my rear leafs are rusty and look like crap so I could just replace them. Anybody have any idea's on what leafs to get to help this out?? thanks

The 285/75/16 will be about 32-33" depending on rubber. I run that size for my winter tires on stock Jeep wheels. Without spacers on the rear the inside sidewalls are VERY close to the leaf springs. I'm not sure on the backspacing tho.

Thanks, I noticed your pic, very nice XJ, looks very similar to mine in height, What brand and size lift are you running? Also you still have fender flares, any rubbing? does yours get on the trails? And if you dont mind is the width of your 285/75r16's similar to the 33x12.50?
And if it wasnt enough already with the questions what kind of front bumper is that...I like it

 

right now I have 1.5" between my rear inner sidewall and leafsprings. And my front control arm has a few marks on it where the tire rubbed on full lock turn. So in reality it looks like I will probably need spacers and fender trimming if its gonna hit the trails...
Almost considering dumping the 16" rims for a set of 15"'s...

 

Its part RC and skyjacker. 5 1/2 in front 6" in rear. I need to level it. Front flares on rub when the wheel is fully locked. Still have trimming to do. Hasn't seen any trails yet...soon tho. The 285's are not as wide as the 33's but ill measure when I get to work. The front bumper I got off of eBay with the rear too for like $250 shipped from a Fab shop in Tennessee maybe?

 

I just thought of a question. Would a 11.5" wide tire have any more chance of loosing its bead on a 12" rim as apposed to an 8" rim?

I am thinking that when you air down it is the pressure in the tire that keeps it expanded so it holds the bead and that if you ran the tire with less pressure the tire wold be more likely to loose the bead.

What do you guys think?

 

you will loose your bead aton if your run a 11.5 wide tire on a 15x12 rim. stick with a 8 inch wide rim

 

If I install a Iorn Works 5.5 will it be ok to use the t-case drop for a few months till I can save up for a SYI & driveshaft or do I need to wait and install the lift when i get all my stuff together?
