An open differential always transfers torque to the wheel with the least mechanical resistance. For example, if you've got one tire in the air and one on the ground then the only tire that can actually help you won't get any power. Not good. A limited slip (there are several different types) does exactly what it says, it limits slip of the tires. Usually as one tire spins, a set of clutch packs or otherwise mechanical actuation sends some torque to the other tire.

explorer 8.8's are cheap and everywhere, 31 spline, useful gear ratios, disc brakes, etc.
but the only real reason to go to an 8.8 is the width and bolt pattern match the front axle. with 36's you should be looking at upgrading the dana30 as well.
dana30 front and dana35 or 8.25 rear

Like KTMracer said, up front D44 minimum or build up your D30.

and what rearend came under an xj can be loosely related to whether or not it had abs, but it isn't a tell tale sign. generally 8.25 equipped xjs didn't have abs and dana35 equipped xjs did have abs.
