An open differential always transfers torque to the wheel with the least mechanical resistance. For example, if you've got one tire in the air and one on the ground then the only tire that can actually help you won't get any power. Not good. A limited slip (there are several different types) does exactly what it says, it limits slip of the tires. Usually as one tire spins, a set of clutch packs or otherwise mechanical actuation sends some torque to the other tire.

So if you have a open differential I wouldn't need a locker you would only need a locker in a limited slip am I thinking right?

Opposite. A limited slip acts similar to a locker. You get a locker so that you DO NOT have an open diff. An open diff is your worst choice.

Would a 8.8 limited slip 2.73 gear out of a mustang work or are those not strong enough

Those gears wouldn't work. Have to be the sane front and rear, and 2.73 isn't high enough anyway

i believe they are narrower, and many are 28 spline.

explorer 8.8's are cheap and everywhere, 31 spline, useful gear ratios, disc brakes, etc.

but the only real reason to go to an 8.8 is the width and bolt pattern match the front axle. with 36's you should be looking at upgrading the dana30 as well.

if I get the 8.8 in the rear then what should I get in the front ? And how do you know which cherokees 2001 have the 8.25 and could they hold up to 36's?

Check this thread on axle ID.

Like KTMracer said, up front D44 minimum or build up your D30.

what im saying is theres no reason to limit yourself to an 8.8 because you should be looking for a stronger front axle. the strongest axle with the 5x4.5 bolt pattern is a dana 30 unfortunately. and that is not a reliable option for running 36's

and what rearend came under an xj can be loosely related to whether or not it had abs, but it isn't a tell tale sign. generally 8.25 equipped xjs didn't have abs and dana35 equipped xjs did have abs.
