Affordable high-flow cats for 01 xj
Hi fellas!
This goes to you 2001 xj owners out there.
I was wondering what HIGH-FLOW catalytic converter options are out there AND that would pair well with a flowmaster 40 or 44 exhaust.
feom what I understand the 01’ XJ’s have precats with 4 02 sensors.
If so could you provide me a link or a part number? I’m confused with which are compatible with the 2001 xj and which to order.
i was looking on the internet and I found magnaflow cats but they were like $500 and I’m not even sure if they would fit. Not trying to break the bank on buying a cat.
I am going to be running 2.5 piping along with 2.5 flow master 40.
any thoughts or experience with your cat+mufflers?
thanks guys!

If you cats are clogged, that will rob power, cause over heat.
You can replace them with stock, or instal a hollowed out "test cat" that depends if you need smog test or not.
High flow cats verses good stock likely wont make any difference in power.
It is what it is.

Not true, please refrain from posting misinformation.
OP, unfortunately low cost and catalytic converters don't mix well. Damn things cost a bloody fortune. There's also California legal and 48 state legal, with or without O2 buns, it can get really complicated looking for the right one.
Try looking here https://www.walkerexhaust.com/produc...onverters.html
for your year, they have direct OEM replacements, and get the part numbers you need...not sure if the have high flow units, but once you have a good part number you should be able to cross reference and find a high flow equivalent.

As roninofako noted, need to know if that's a CA XJ as well as where you live now and what their inspection requirements are.
Why do you want a high-flow cat? Is yours failing? Can't pass emissions?
Try eBay. There's a couple of Canadian companies that offer "not trying to break the bank" cats. I used https://www.ebay.com/str/calnorthautoparts and got mine for $254.95. I got a CA XJ but needed to pass CT inspection (no OBD codes). It works. I did.
(Note: Install date July 2021. Will report if it cracks, fails, explodes, etc., but so far, so good. Company has 100% positive feedback, TIFWIW).

I'm not a fan of exhaust fumes taking over my lungs. No cats and high flow cats both stink. If you care about your health, you'll stick with a high quality OEM-style cat. Not to mention, I'm not a huge fan of the 4.0s sound with no cats or high flow cats. It just sounds like noise, not good noise though.
I used to own a heavily modified performance car that was tuned and I would try all sorts of setups.

The sensors are required for fuel trim data, so you can eliminate them with some amount of effort, so technically you're correct, my apologies, carry on

The front o2 sensor or sensors is what controls the air/fuel ratio after going into closed loop. The ones behind the cats are just to monitor cat efficiency, if you delete them it may set a check engine light off but won't affect the fuel ratio. To get the check engine light off you can use two spark plug non foulers on the back o2 sensor, if that doesn't work put some steel wool in them.

I got 2 magnaflow hi-flow cats for my camaro. I wasnt complaining about $100 each........ from Summit.
But this was almost 3 years ago. Probably twice that now.

Your O2 sensors "expect" a certain temp which is altered by the cats, if you get rid of the cat just make sure to drop the big bucks (5$) to buy a O2 sensor spacer aka spark plug non- fouler.
If you buy a new cat I think i got one off ebay at around 50$ for 2, they are not as efficent, but neither are most high flow cats.
