Early abs systems worked half way when they do work.Same thing with the early air bag systems. Both have gotten a lot better over the years tho.

So Many terrible perspectives I have read on this post.

There is a way to add Anti-lock Brakes to a previously non-equipped XJ.

And, I am Sure the Anti-Lock Braking System is worth it.

I had a '91 with the big brakes and power brakes.

I have several Classics and motorcycles.

I had a 1989 Wagoneer Limited with Anti-Lock Brakes.

It is too crowded sometimes.
Sometimes ------

I Lost my Loves as others ran into me.
I very nearly ran into someone at Sacramento Traffic with heavy rain at speed, with my 1989 Wagoneer Limited with Anti-Lock brakes.
That stopping distance is a Something!.

I lost my '91 that I had for more that 15 years.
I got used to Power Brakes with-out Anti-Lock,'

I actually go places on the Road Safely, Regularly.

It is important.

The Original Poster was with a valid consideration in my opinion.

The digression may have been some talk for another place.

There is a way to equip an A.B.S. correctly.

If 'you' have to then maybe vent your problems elsewhere.

There can be correct work completed.

Just because it can be completed, doesn't mean it should.

ABS wasn't federally mandated until 2011...there were plenty of ABS systems before that, but not all of them were great. The XJ falls into that category. ABS on the XJ was garbage.

I'm with the others in this thread, if my XJ had it, I'd delete it. It's a sub-par system that's more trouble than it's worth.

I didn't add abs to non-abs cherokee, but I did axle swap to abs cherokee, which cover some of the components required for the axle part.

Basically you need to use a Dana 30 ABS equipped axle shaft with tone ring

you will also need bracket to mount the sensor on the axle ear, which is relatively easy.

Since I am doing axle swap, it has to be better than the D35. I did a Ford 8.8 rear axle swap trying to keep the abs, the way I did it was to find a 8.8 with abs tone ring, then grind down every other teeth:

use the 8.8 abs sensor splice the wire to original Cherokee abs wiring.

As for the electronic module including the ABS pump, I don't have to touch any of those since my is factory equipped. If memory serve me right, its much better to use 97+ ABS system than the earlier cherokee. you will loss your brake altogether if the early system fail, while late model one will just loss ABS capability but you can still apply brake.

I can pull the fuse when wheeling where I don't want ABS, but most of the time I don't touch it at all and just wheel with ABS.

My 2000 XJ does not have ABS either and haven't had any problems in the rain! I do slow down when theirs big puddles in the road. On the highway when it's raining I still go about 60mph and haven't had any issues with it slipping or anything. I use Goodyear wrangler tires. But as far as adding ABS to your XJ, I wouldn't, seems like too much work and extra weight, just got to be careful and make sure your tires are in good shape.

ABS is dangerous off road and can be on road as well. None for me, I even disable it in my other vehicles.

Stopping distance is longer with ABS.
What ABS allows you to do, is steer with your foot mashed on the brake pedal.
But, if you don't know defensive driving maneuvers, what good is that? And if you knew those maneuvers, you probably wouldn't be the person that slams on the brakes in a panic.....

I got to visit the Chrysler proving grounds in Wittman, Arizona years ago. Special invitation deal. The guy who invited me worked on brake testing. He flat out told me that he could stop any car without ABS in shorter distance that one equipped with ABS.

Ah ,AZ proving grounds in the summertime. I was in the Phoenix area years ago in August doing some "car stuff" along with a "major manufacturer". We would start vehicles that had not run for days but were sitting in the sun and the electric cooling fan would come on immediately (AC was off)

Sadly, it's gone now. I got to go on the 3 lane oval, the bumpy road, and the huge peak.
They hid all the new Grand Cherokees from us. I've got photos stashed somewhere.

Proper tires & correct tire inflation goes along ways. And now I see I replied to an old post…….
