Default Adding ABS

I have 2000 xj 4x4 with out ABS. Had a slightly terrifying moment the other night after it rained and was wondering if it's possible to add ABS that didn't come with it from the factory?

It would be more work than it is worth. I'm not sure why you would want to add abs you have more control without it. I deleted the abs on my truck because it about caused and accident a couple times.

Will be a lot easier and cheaper to sell your xj and buy one with abs. You'd have to change out the rear end and swap out a lot of parts and pray you did it right. But to older people like that learned to drive before it kinda don't like it and rather not have it.

Also if you have an abs jeep you get the crappy dana 35 rear.

WELCOME

Why not do a rear disc conversion?

I don't think rear disk brakes are a necessary expense unless you are running much larger tires. Drum brakes that are properly set up and adjusted work perfectly fine.

I agree to a degree. Drum brakes are fine, but man o man disc brakes are so much easier and faster to work on that I think it makes up for the initial expense of big David's kit. Over time I think the disc upgrade is cheaper as well.

I have a 2000 with ABS. Trust me, you don't want it. I'll be glad when mine is finally deleted.

Anything that is more than ten years old and not a luxury vehicle usually had ABS that barely worked if it did at all.

My 95 F150 has rear ABS and it usually kicks in on wet pavement and makes stopping distance even longer than when it fails to kick in.

I'll sell you the drum brakes off my 2k XJ if you want them, cheap!! Pm me if you want them.

I don't like them because they always fill up with sand and rocks when off-road. That destroys the shoes every time, bummer.

I have a 2001 xj with ABS and it works great . I would never get rid of the ABS system . if you know how they work and what they will do in a ABS stop its no problem . the problem is some people will pump the brake with ABS and that will screw up a ABS stop and you will never stop .

No, that's not the problem. The problem is the ABS kicking on when it shouldn't, making the Jeep jerk all over the road and not kicking off when traction returns. It's especially bad under low speed light braking on a slightly bumpy surface, because the violent response is completely unexpected in those conditions. I've had the idiot thing kick on in a WalMart parking lot. The thing has damned near ripped the steering wheel out of my hands a few times with the sudden jerking. It's actually gotten better in recent years, thankfully. In the first few years I had it, it made even a slow speed trip a few blocks to the grocery store a potentially harrowing experience.

Contrast that with my much newer Subaru's ABS. It's amazingly smooth and has saved me twice from crashes when idiots have pulled out in front of me. If I could have an ABS with 14 years of technological improvement on my XJ, maybe I would want to keep it. As it sits, I'll shed no tears at the loss of it when my 8.8 goes in.

From what I've heard, you're probably better off without it... those ABS systems had problems.
