ok im lookin at a 8.8 outta a 91 ranger. so as i was reading along it says it has a 28 spline. i know the 31 spline is better. but i dont know what the hell that is lol and can i swap it to a 31 spline. the reason i like this axle is because it comes with a locker and hd diff cover. sry for the noob questions just makin sure im doing it right

If you can pick it up cheep then do it then go to a JU and get a 95-01 explorer 8.8 and swap everything over. The ranger axles just aren't worth the work and yes they are 28 spline. Good luck

Oh and what type of locker?

Well I don't think you can use a lunchbox style locker at a 28 sine count in an explorer wich has 31 spline count. Does he already have the aftermarket shafts installed? If not then just buy the diff cover off of him and call it a day

Also when you do go ahead and go with the explorer rear end here are some quick tips for you.
When you go for a locker look for a full locker with case and all NOT just a lunch box locker. The carrier in an 8.8 is one of the weakest links for the axle.
Another thing is to weld the axle tubes to the housing. Sponging a tube is not very fun.
Last but not least don't for get to grab the sling plates so you can mount your shocks. Other wise you'l need to weld on shock tabs

I have a question along a similiar line, a friend cant decide whether to scrap his crown vic, or sell it, it was a police car originally, it has the factory air locker, is it worth looking into? if he scraps it, he would give it to me, or if he wants to sell I would have to pick up another axle & swap it into it. or I would have to buy, he says $650 for the car, but it is high milkeage, & uses oil, several cans of stop leak later, & radiator is now not leaking & he drives it 200 miles a week, he has several other vehicles & he calls it his beater, he is looking for something to catch his eye, & nothing has yet. I have no interest in parting it out.
anyway I never know what the future may hold, but is it worth it to pick it up, especially since it has the factory air locker? or forget it, since it is on a crown vic.

Do you know what the rear end is? It may be worth looking into if it's an axle that has any type of aftermarket support

if I remember right the car is a 1992, I can ask him next time we work together, as we have been friends for 20 + years.
