Default 4x4 not working. Posi-lock.

Hey guys, newbie here. Sorry if I'm not posting this in the right area. Please move it if needed.

91 XJ 2 door 4.0 5spd

I bought this jeep a couple weeks ago. Its my first jeep ever, and VERY first experience with Posi-Lock (cable lock?). I was coming through some thick mud last night and stuck it in 4L exactly the way the guy I bought it from showed me. Vehicle stopped, tranny in N, move to 4L, push button on cable and pull out. Noticed my front tires weren't spinning at all. I have no idea where to even start looking.

Right hand side of the axle housing. Rear. That's where the posi-lock cable should be hooked up.

Does this Jeep have a locker in the front?

i never had any luck with those. tried a couple. ended up bypassing it and locking the fork over via hose clamp around the axle shaft, holding it in the permanently locked position, till i could pull my solid axle housing from my limited parts jeep. bonus with that, i gain the larger 297 u-joints, and lose the 2 piece shaft. but the control arm mounts are much stronger on that disconnect housing.

I doubt it has a locker in the front, because if it did the driver side front would get power in 4x4 without the posi lock engaged.

Well then, search CAD elimination and be done with it.

i think with that cable, you push the button in, pull the handle out, and turn the handle/**** to lock it in place, no? i can't remember, i only had that newer design one for about a week.

is the handle sliding back in? if so, that's why you're not getting front axle engagement.
