Anyone have any input on installing a larger gas tank, is it worth the extra $ or should o just mount rotopax on the roof rack when needed?

For the price is say definitely not worth it. A cheaper alternative? If there is one then it might be cool. I may even be interested. Lol.

Depending on the year of your XJ, you could mod the tank to hold more fuel.

This won't work for my late model, and I am planning on Rotopax myself! Expensive though...

D^mm a $1k for it is a chunk of change but does have a lot of options included in/on it. I was impressed with maintaining to exact stock location with extra 10 gal added the options internal foam is really a nice touch as well as the fuel pump even for older one inside the tank. I did like the built on skid plate with a foam layer between the skid and tank.

But in the end guess I would pass for the money being asked.

I was looking at the last year. It would be good to go an extra 125-150 miles. I would need to win the lottery probably but i would do That if i was planning on touring America

That 88 Cherokee chief diesel that was on CF recently had a 30 gallon tank. I don't know if it was factory or not, if it was maybe it could be found new and modified to fit the fuel pump assembly and use gasoline?

Just a thought. Can't imagining it being $1000 if the tank could be sourced.

For $1000, I'll carry two 5 gal. cans!

Eh, the tank is more practical though. Alot of areas that don't let you carry gas cans like tunnels. Plus the space they take up.

And I've seen the 30 gal tank for less than 1000. I've seen one for 400. Fits in stock space. Just shaped wierd. Saw it in jP magazine iirc like 1 to 1 1/2 ago. Forgot the make of it

Just something to consider:

A gallon of gasoline weighs 6 lbs, so 10 gallons in Rotopax cans would put 60 extra pounds on your roof. It probably won't make a huge difference for most of us, but if you're also running other gear on your roof rack you might find yourself in a situation where every extra pound on your roof is raising your center of gravity that much more and making the Jeep top heavy. The big advantage of that insanely priced tank is that it puts the extra weight down low, where it could possibly help offset the weight of some of the gear stored up high. I'm not sure if that benefit is worth $1000, but it could be depending on your build and the type of driving you're doing.

For reference, water weighs 8 lbs per gallon. Any time you put liquid up high, you're adding weight in an unfriendly location.
