Default 2wd swap

Im looking to convert my 95 xj from 2wd to 4wd, most of the work is done, ie front axle, t case shifter, ect. The 2wd trans only has 32k since an overhaul. I know it would be easier to just swap a 4wd trans in, but Im more of the build it or modify it mindset. Does anyone on here have experience cutting the output shaft to accommodate a t case? I read something about it once on another forum, but cant find it again.

Why not find a donor tranny in the SY and swap out the tailhousing and output shaft?

If Im going through that much effort I would just rebuild the JY trans but Im honestly looking to get out of pulling the trans apart and would much rather convert the 2wd so its more of "my work".

Sounds like a bad idea IMO. Might try a divorce mount if it isn't sitting on top of the rear axle once you have it installed. On that note, do the spline even go that far into the tranny so that it can be cut? Sounds scary to me

Actually yes they do, well kinda, they stop and start again, like it was meant to be a 4wd output shaft and then the factory just never cut it to length. baffled me when I rebuilt it but Ive never pulled another 2wd trans apart to see if they are all like that.

I honestly don't think anyone on here has tried this trick but you never know. my best advice is to try it. Worst case scenario is you have to change output shafts. You are gonna run a 4X4 tailhousing aren't you?

On a 4wd there is no tail shaft housing per say, same spacer as you find on a 4wd trans but on 4wd trans, the t case bolts to that. Its the 2wd trans that needs a tail shaft housing. I hope somebody has tried and had success with this, but Im not sure. Like I said, i saw somewhere it was possible but cant find it again for the life of me

Man I would seriously give it a try especially if it seems as though they were already designing it to be a 4X4 not cut to length. You sparked my curiosity just cuz I have a handfull of 2wd trannies at my disposal that I would love to turn into spares
