I so I have the AX 5 trans and I have bolted up a np231 for several different reasons but I have run into a problem it seems. Since I have out the new tcase in it has been pissing trans fluid from between the tcase and trans . I have replaced the output shaft seal on the trans a couple times thinking it may have been a bad seal but it still is leaking like crazy >:/ anybody got any ideas? Is the diameter on the tcase different so the seal is not matching up?
The transfer case and transmission have no sealing ability between each other. They're independent units.
So your AX-5 is leaking shortly after you put a new seal in? Fast seal death is usually a sign that the bearing behind it is toast.

The AX5 is a manual and uses gear oil.Originally Posted by xjwheeler777

The np231 uses atf.
Which are you leaking?

^ This. Your transfer case has seals too in the rear output shaft that could be leaking.Originally Posted by sreeb

I am leaking gear oil so I know it's conning from the transmission but I still can't figure out what the problem is

And then confirm that the sealing surface on the output shaft is in good condition.Originally Posted by salad
Did you read post #2?
Also, how did the seals you removed look? Any signs of abrasion or swelling?
I think I recall reading the there might have been different output shaft spline counts in different years. Measure the diameter of the output shaft sealing surface and make sure the seal is designed for that size.
Ya I read post two . When I took everything out it looked great now swelling nothing everything was fine before I did the swap before I did the swap I had no leak what so ever. An then I did the swap and it is just pissing gear oil
Oh and I do know that the spline counts are matched .. I drive it every day I just have to add oil non stop

I don't doubt the spline counts match the transfer case but is it possible you don't have the right seal for your output shaft?Originally Posted by xjwheeler777

That is a goo possibility I am running the seal tht it calls for running the no207.. Should I try running one the same year as my t-case ?

I would measure the diameter of the shaft and look up the seal specs to make sure they match. Especially if you don't know what some PO may have done to it.Originally Posted by xjwheeler777

I have no knowledge of early XJs specifically.
