Not sure about that, but you can put the transmission in low (all the way back) and it won't shift above 2nd. Why are you concerned about keeping it in first?

I can't speak for achaplin but, for me it would be nice when going down hills. When I am wheeling and going down some steep long hills, the jeep wants to roll on causing me to use my brakes more. Which in turn starts the ol' hot brake smell. I have heard of a mod that will lock the tranny up but, I can't remeber what has to be done either..

I know you can do this my first jeep had it on it it was a wire looped from the tranny to a toggle switch in my jeep you could trun it on and off that way.. there are many uses for this going over hills... pulling a buddy out of a mudd hole... driving slowin trails works the tranny hard shifting back and forth from 1st to 2nd... have you ever climed a hill got on you jeep hard and it shifted to second then hit shifts back down... usually to late you have lost all of your momentum...

It is handy!

Can't say I've ever had an issue like that. Usually 4 low works just fine for whatever I need to to do.

If I remember right, if you manually shift the transmission down into first, it won't shift into second until like 4,000 rpm. I know when I am decelerating, mine doesn't downshift from second to first until I get down to 25mph.

There are plenty of folks making manual shift boxes for the AW4s.

Try Lead Foot, he's a vendor here and he's putting one together, soon to be available i hope...

My Jeep is a 2001...

the transmission is controlled by a computer... I did this (before I swapped everything out and put in a th400). All you need to do is jump two of the leds, and puta switch between one of the wires.

It will *not* force it to stay in first, but it will prevent it from shifting into third. f I can find it, I'll post.

Check jeepsunlimited dot com .... there's where I found it. If I remember correctly, it took all of about five minutes.

or you can just put in an art car shifter, which lets you stay in any gear:
