well just for reality sake i'm going to give two options. the first one is if i had no money and just had standard resorses, the second is if i had access to a magic shed full of the stuff.
i would first patch up the back windows with steel/or bullet proof glass. then attatch a plow/or build a curved plow with a winch hooked up to it so it can be ajusted. i would then use an old chain link fence and mount a part if it 3 inches away from the windshield so it has some room to flex before smacking the window/or i would build a ridgid cage with mesh screen to cover it. after that i would add two small honda gas tanks in the back that gravity feed the xj's tank/or get a fuel cell to feed the tank. as for supplies i would make a quick wooden box to tie to the roof to hold supplies/ or just buy one of those steel cage type ones for the xj. then i would put some studded snow tires on it for when the zombies get under the jeep/or put studded run flat snow tires on. as for weapons i would have a m1 garand a cig as a side arm, and a 12 guage pump shotgun. no exeptions. then as a finishing touch i would have a cb that gets both civilian and police channels with a giant metal whip atenna along with a PA system hooked up. if i think of anymore ill add on later

If you've ever watched any zombie movie/show you should know the first thing is to get out of high populace areas. My XJ is already quite capable of doing that for me so there's not much I'd have to do to it for it to be an excellent survival rig. Here's a full breakdown of what I would do.
News breaks out that there's a possible outbreak of a "Zombie Virus". It's has started in California, and is estimated to spread to the east coast of the US within 1 week. I assume it'll only take 3-4 days to spread so I can make sure I'm outta Dodge before it reaches me. This means I gotta move quickly. Most people are going to realize that it's not a hoax by the next day, and mass hysteria will ensue. Looting will start at grocery stores, so I need to stock on food before the chaos starts.
Day 1 (news of the virus is first heard)
Step 1: Go to Barnes&Noble and get a copy of Max Brooks, The Zombie Survival Guide. This will be one of your most treasured possessions in the coming days, as it gives specific details of past outbreaks (zombies don't change their tactics) and how to kill them quickly. I also need to grab an up to date map of the US and Canada.
Step 2: Send my wife to stock up on dry goods. Peanut butter, canned soups, crackers, dried fruits, various jerky meats, toilet paper - these are just a few of the perfect survival supplies that we'll be needing.
Step 3: While my wife is at the store, I go to the local gun shops and stock up on ammo for the 12 gauge and .45. While there, I also pick up an AR-15 (with extra ammo) and a machete. Zombies can only be killed one way - kill the brain. Whether that be by bullet or a severed head, I need to make sure I can kill them from a distance and in close quarters.
Step 4: Now that I have adequate protection, I need to make sure I have survival gear. I can sleep in the Jeep, so a tent isn't needed. However, extra first aid, a flare gun, flare sticks, wilderness clothing, fishing items, etc. - these will all come in handy.
Step 5: I need to stop an auto parts store. I'll stock up on fluids, filters, tire repair kits, extra wiper blades, etc.
Step 6: Pack. I don't need much, just a duffel bag that has a couple extra sets of clothes in it. I'll need my camel back and an adequate amount of water storage (4-5 gallons). My pancake air compressor will definitely come in handy. I already have tools in the XJ so I'm set there. I need to make sure I have extra gas cans as well, at least 10-15 gallons worth.
When packing the XJ, I need to make sure that everything is accessible, but also secured down.
Step 7: Leave the house and head towards a 4x4 shop I know will have the modification supplies I need. While headed there, I make sure to gas up and fill my extra gas cans.
Day 2 (news of the virus is believed as more and more reports are broadcast. Hysteria and looting begins)
At this point, people are focusing on food and firearms. This allows me to go to various 4x4 shops and spend a day upgrading my Jeep without fear of others. My Jeep is all that's left to take care of, so I can simply stay at the shop through the coming night. With only one day to do mods, I need to focus on what will help the most with what I already have. The hysteria is actually an aid to me at this point. While others are looting Wally World, I don't have to worry about cost as no one is there to make me pay for what I'm getting.
1. Plexi for all windows.
2. Skids - Front, t-case, and gas tank
3. Secondary 10 gallon fuel tank. Granted it's not a full size tank, but it fits in the rear cargo area without eating up too much room and doesn't weigh me down too much. Plus, an extra 100 miles driving distance could save my bacon.
4. Winch bumper w/ 9000lbs winch.
5. 32" M/T's. It's not much, but it's an extra .5" of axle clearance.
6. A CB that picks up both civi and police channels
It doesn't sound like much, but it gives me what I will be likely to use. Simplicity is the key in a situation like this.
Day 3 (people begin to wonder, "Should I try to get out of the city?")
While others are just now saying, "Let's go". I'm already on the road. Though of road is much more fun, staying on freeways gives me the most fuel efficient and fastest route north. I also have more opportunities to gas up as needed by staying on paved roads, as well as re stock if need be. Why north you wonder? Canada is a very open place that you can literally get lost in. You can be miles upon miles from another person there. This works to your advantage as zombies are going to focus on high populations first. Yes, they are the "living dead", but they will continually decompose at a normal rate and will eventually stop functioning within 1-2 months worldwide. At this point, it's just a waiting game, doing all I can to survive and keep my wife alive as well until the outbreak is over.
What's funny, is I haven't really given this much, if any, thought. All this came to mind while typing. I guess it's just from watching all the movies and shows.

Well, i would upgrade to a 6.5 in long arm kit, 34" tires, bull bar, roof rack, then i would rob the nearest gun store and beer store, then offroad somewhere far into the open wilderness and live off the land..Most likely with all my closest friends.
Not a bad plan?
EDIT: i actually got bored one day and wrote a six page paper about a zombie apocolypse, similar to what i said here but alittle different and with more detail hahah

Being not in the know how for zombies, can they swim, or do they simply sink? And furthermore, if they sink, can they breathe underwater.
I'm taking my XJ through the front doors of the Bass Pro Shops 5 minutes from my house, loading up, then Wal-mart across the street, then hitting the closest marina and stealing a sailboat.
If anyone wants my rig it'll be left gassed up for ya at the dock with a .38 in the center console and keys in the ignition.

zombies dont breathe they're dead, so you gotta be careful on a boat, what about hawaii? i wouldnt think that anybody would be infected there right? and even if the zombies did try to make it there underwater it would take them days or even weeks before they did and i highly doubt they would survive underwater for long anyways, think about the sharks that would get them, easy food for them, plus they would be all bloated and probably just end up decaying faster, i think an island would be yours best bet, or somewhere like canada or alaska
