Quote: A lot of people tell me "oh it's a Jeep, they just make noises".. which in some cases is true, but it's still worth investigating the cause of the noise.

I've been able to fix just about every odd noise except for one - sounds like something hard and plastic rattling near my firewall when in gear and stopped. Cannot for the life of me figure out what it is.

Honestly, This sounds like something that just happened to me in my 2000. Tool me some carful listening, but I found that it was the screws in the interior door molding. The three inclusing the one in the handle had come a little loose. Hope that is the solution you needed, the rattles annoy me so I am quick to want to fix them.

Hey OP Im new to XJ's having came from tuner cars and hot rods. Its a bit of a different world with these. The slip yoke thing was much appreciated, as i was getting ready to replace the wheel cylinders cause i thought they were sticking. But yeah just one other question, regarding the 4wd.... Sometimes it takes a long time to engage when going from 2 to 4full time, and intermittently gets stuck in part time. This usually happens in cold temps. Any ideas?

Linkage underneath gets rusty and crappy. A bit of cleaning and grease should help out. Also check fluid level and condition.

Quote: That water pump failure: You're talking about the VM Motori engine right? On the 4.0Ls they last for a very long time
My water pump on my 4.0 went bad at about 100k due to bearing failure. 100k for a water pump I think is pretty good though

Factory fog light switch melting, hatch and other doors will not open, funky electrical problems because of bad grounds. Just throwing some more common problems out there

Edit: Jesus I didn't see that this was old, I thought it was new haha

Nothing wrong with bringing it back to the top. Where do the wires for the rear speakers run? Mine don't work.

I believe they run from the soundbar down the passenger side of the d pillar

I had the fog light switch issue, when my Jeep was about two years old. It was a bit worrisome, as I had just started an 85 mole drive home, about 11 at night, on Xmas. The dealership got a visit, on the following business day.

Yes, from sound bar to the passenger side rear hatch pillar behind the passenger side interior panel is where they plug in. Dont confuse it with the tail light plug that is next to it.
