So I know there are many threads out there on the common issue of XJ's lack of headrests on rear bench seat.
Years ago when I had a Cherokee I looked into it but never bothered installing them or swapping in ZJ or WJ seats and eventually sold the Jeep.
Now I own 2 XJs (89 Wagoneer and 91 Briarwood) and I am once again looking into what to do about this. Seems nothing has changed except some newer write-ups.
I found a Euro XJ bench seat with headrests on some market website in Switzerland. But even besides the expense of shipping, I cannot even register an account on the site without a local phone and address.
Even tried one of those proxy purchase assist services but they could not help using that website which is like a swiss craigslist.
Started looking for matching tan leather seats from a ZJ and then WJ but they are hard to come by, at least in my efforts and my area. Still looking....
Then I started to consider if there exists some aftermarket solution like back in the 70s or 80s. That was a hard search too. But eventually found a german product that might work. It's just a slip on headrest that drops down the seat on both sides (front and back of bench) so the passenger's body sits back on it and I guess it can be made to fit snug by bending if needed. The headrest part is not adjustable but is tall and looks stiff and sturdy. They are not cheap though. I am wondering if this provides the same level of whiplash protection and safety as a "normal" headrest or at least close enough. Not looking for just a comfort solution, I want my passengers (mainly my 10 year old) to not get neck injury if ever in a rear end accident.
I found a set European XJ seats in England.
Fronts and rears were leather and the rear had the headrests like they do.
The seats themselves the guy was selling cheap. Think it was $75.
I contacted the guy telling him I just wanted the upper part of the back seat with the headrests.
He was more then willing to sell me that but wanted the price of the whole set since he was breaking it up.
Which I thought was fair.
Thing was shipping just that piece was $400 maybe $500 to the US.
And as much as I want them could not justify that.
As much as I like the idea of the split seat I do not want to use ZJ or WJ seats so....
So I am doing the DIY route myself.
Talking front seat headrest parts and putting them in the back seat.
I have a ton of extra XJ seat parts so.......
Spent the past year playing with it here and there.
Not quite figured out the logistics but am real close.
Be curious what you and other people come up with so will be following this thread.
Thanks for asking. LOL.
If I decide to add headrests to XJ bench seat, I would want to buy another seat from salvage yard or wherever to try it on first. All the options seem like a hassle and nobody wants to assist because of insurance purposes in case the install fails in an accident and do t want to be liable (understandable).
I decided to purchase these headrests and thinking about adding a tight full seat cover to wrap around it and make them more “attached” to seat (no idea which cover would be best).
I will send you a link to the product but it’s not in English FYI.
