Reason: Error
Thanks, Indeed, 7" wide steel rims hold our 225-245 tires better and steel bends rather than brakes on the trail - I learned this the hard way when I destroyed both a tire and an 8" wide Chinese made aluminum wheel (installed by my Jeep's previous owner) in Death Vally. I now run these Black Rock dimpled 7x16's - though not XJ retro like yours, they are Jeep Retro and I haven't had a flat since switching to them :
I got a 3in rough country lift with full leaf springs. Started at 31in in the front and 30in in the back from ground level to fender to 36in front and back after the lift and tires.
tires are 31in Toyo AT3 severe winter peak rated
rims are crager 15x8.5 with about 4.25 backspace
I bend some of the fender well to keep from rubbing and cut the bottom inside corners off of the finders.
it’s kind of on a little bit of a slope, sorry about that This was her before. Big difference

Changed the wheels and tires, the 17” JK wheels were too big for my liking. TJ Moab’s with 265/75/16 Falken AT3. OME HD lift with Bilstein 5100s. Except for the rear brakes, everything suspension, steering and braking is all new. Have to do the rear disc conversion in the spring, going for paint and body this week.
update: just installed Ruff Country 3.5" on 31/10.5/15 Cooper STT Pro's

I spent a lot of time going through this thread and the other forums before buying a kit for this 2001 with the factory Up Country package. Suspension was still in great shape, so I almost went ahead with a 3" rough country, but figured I'd go budget first and add 2" spacers/shackles to the factory-provided 1" extended coils. Easy upgrade, and first put on some 30" AT tires on the factory 15" wheels, but still didn't get the exact look I was after, so went up to 31". No rubbing, and plenty satisfied for this DD>
it’s worth getting, my advice is get the full leaf springs, I got the add a leaf and honestly worried about doing the install.
Work in progress Can’t wait to pull it all apart Glad it doesn’t sit that low anymore Bought it from my buddy and the fenders were so crushed cause of these wheels. I don’t like them really.
I am very happy with the dry/wet performance, and cruising ability. Snow in the forcast this week, so ill get to test them in that as well. The rim guard is a nice touch as well. this should help immensely with airing down. I am guessing they will withstand 10PSI quite nicely.

I've had this XJ for 4 or 5 years now,, almost made the mistake of selling it, I rarely drive it, it's usually trailerd to Silver Lake Sand Dunes in Michigan, or out to Ouray or other Colorado destinations. Never been in water or MUD!! It has sat in the garage since my return from Mich July 2023. Thinking I must be bored with it, (got way to many "hanger queens" ) I finally decided to sell it after several folks have bugged me about it. I got it out of storage, flipped on the A/C ( upper 90's and DAM humid) and drove it down the road, and realized just how nice, and fun, it is to drive, even on the road. Bought from a Veterans Hospital in Arkansas, it's rust free and WAS totally stock,, around 133K. Formerly involved in Jeep sand drag racing in the 70's, I'm no stranger to 4X4's. Six months after I bought it I started setting it up for off road use.
4.5 IRO fully adjustable short arm front suspension

IRO front and rear spring kits with IRO shackles
Brown Dog Engine clamps with poly motor mounts
HD Trans mount
IRO SYE
Tom Woods Constant Velocity HD rear drive shaft
Bilstein 5100 shocks
New front Bumper with WARN winch
Modified alternator and under hood big gauge wiring
8.25 Rear Axle ( Had a Dana 35 with ABS brakes,,yuk)
HD axles
New Front Axle Joints
sway bar disconects
Eaton Tru trac posi units front and rear ( Not wanting to deal with "push" on tight corners on mountain ledge roads with locked axles)
4:56 Yukon gears
KM3 31.50 X 15 BFG
Came close to selling it, called the guy and told him I just couldn't do it, these old XJ's have been a favorite of mine for years, so much fun off road. Shout out to Nick at KOLACK Performance for the great pricing and experienced parts assessments and recommendations needed to make the Jeep trail ready for mountain roads.
Good call keeping it! Looks like the big sister to mine. Mine was my mom's who was from Washington, Iowa in the 1970s, so there's even an indirect Iowa tie (I can feel the Iowa summer humidity leaking through your post!).

First XJ on 82 Series RC wheels 4.5" lift, 31x10.50r15 on Rough Country 82 Series Wheels 15x8 -19 offset 1.25" spacers 31x10.50r15 ATs If I remove the spacers they will sit almost flush but I like the look to be honest.
