Thinking about buying a 98' Wrangler 2.5 automatic, is it the same tranny as in the 4.0 ? I know it will not be too fast but gas could go any where and I'm sick of shifting in bumper to bumper traffic, does this jeep work for just getting around ? Hear any issues other then slowww ?

Not the same tranny. It'll either be the 30RH or 32RH, both are 3 speed non OD trannys.

I got one for my wife about 9 months ago or so. I don't mind putzing around town in it. As for highway driving, gas mileage isn't as great as i was expecting. It is very slow and i hate the seats (too stiff). Other than that i don't really mind it. It gets my wife where she wants to go and gets her there safely and that's all i want. Lol i hope i helped, even just a little bit.

All i have heard is its slow and still hard on gas being a 4 cylinder. If its cheap buy it and throw a ls1 in it have power and probably better gas mileage.

Think about it this way. The 4 cyl has to work harder to accelerate and maintain speeds like the 6 cyl...

The biggest problem for any wrangler on the highway is that it's slightly less aerodynamic than a walk in refrigerator. You could swap in a 4 cylinder engine from a 40mpg honda civic and still be getting 21mpg on the highway pushing a wrangler body.

A friend of mine had a 4 cylinder stick yj and was lucky to break 14mpg stock with it.

For your stated use yes... Everyone else is right though. Four squirrels pushing a brick.

The 30/32RH is not a very good transmission. Three speed Chrysler job famous for lack of cooling. The reason is the pump does not move fluid in Park. So if you're in bumper-to-bumper traffic a lot leave it in-gear or Neutral.

You could buy an automatic Tercel, chop it and do a roll cage with a canvas top. That'd be something.

Be faster and get better mileage than a 4 banger wrangler.
