I work at a tires and oil place. And you guys are right. There are a lot of guys I work with that would never touch my jeep. I can't believe some of the idiots they hire in off the streets. if you do go to these type of places, and you have a certain technician you like, don't be afraid to request them. There are some of us who still do a good job. Even if I break something, I own up to it. Thats my rep on the line, lol.

I don't buy that it's the same to change it yourself vs. a shop. I pay between $21-23 for a case (12 qts) of oil at Farm and Fleet and pay around $3-4 for a filter. I think the biggest mistake people make is buying their oil at the parts house. You'll always pay the most for the shelf items at these places. Secondly, as someone else mentioned, changing your own oil allows you to shake down your vehicle and grease it. Most guys at places like Jiffy Lube don't shake your car down or grease it and could honestly care less. I was on a road trip once and my car became due on the trip so I stopped at a Jiffy Lube to get my oil changed. The service guy was so worried about pushing a transmission flush on my car (that had clean fluid in it) and when I declined he huffed off. At my next gas fill up, I popped the hood, and there was my trans dipstick sitting on the radiator. Nice. No offense to any guys who work at these places, but they're not ASE techs and most don't have any training beyond what the store gave them. They're there to up-sell you crap that you usually don't need and that's it. Not to mention they usually use the cheapest filters and oil they can get their hands on. Do it yourself and know you did it right... even if it does cost you more.

I agree completely. On top of really enjoying working on my Jeep, I do so also because I know that it will be done correctly. And if the job has a little screw up, I'll know about it, and fix it. When I have someone help me like with welding or a few other things, I pretty much sit and glare at the part of the Jeep and make sure it's going smooth haha.
