That one recessed into the dash under the steering column is a new one to me. I like it.

 

No photos for you but I can explain somewhat and have experience installing radios from CB's to Amateur rigs being a Extra class ham I have 3 radios mounted in my XJ.

I had 3 CB's laying the house but none I felt were suitable for the XJ install so decided to buy a new one that fit the job better. It was Cobra 40 channel AM with weather. All there is to it are the power/coax hookup remote unit 2"x2 1/2"x1" and the mic hookup it has a very long power wire and fuse that should be connected directly to the battery. The main reason for the connection for that is it gives you a reduced noise floor on the radio a quite noticeable one. The best thing with this unit no modifications at all, no space used inside at all, I mounted my control unit on the firewall just below the dash and ran my coax from the rear bumper under the carpet/console then to remote unit. It does have a speaker plug if you need more volume than the mic can provide, I have an override on my setup that when the radio receiver it uses all the stereo speakers.

All controls for the radio are in the mic itself so all you need is to find a place for the mic hanger. For an antenna I used a 102" whip mounted to my swing out tire carrier bumper, you have many choices here but this is the very best. I do have to fold it down and hook the whip to a "S" hook on my roof rack when low clearance is needed. One thing to always remember is the antenna is 90% of your radio setup a $5000 radio with a cheap antenna will not compete with a $100 radio and a $5000 antenna setup. This is true for any frequency used from UHF-160m. Always max your antenna first if you want the radio to work.

I saved the best part for the last the price it can be bought online for under $100 I paid $85 for mine on sale. Yeah I know most people have one laying around to use but the XJ has space problems and this was the best answer that I found to go with my 2 other radios 2/440 and HF/6M to have all bands covered. This way I can talk to others on the trail to repeaters and to any distance if needed when cell phones don't work.

Yeah, me too. I have never talked to anyone before you that has even given these a shot. I'm glad to know that I don't have to mess with the huge box to get a good radio. Do you have a certain antenna you recommend in particular?

 

In Jersey , I think up high like on the roof with the Swaps in the pinelands .

 

Here in Kansas we have a lot of hills and big revines all really close together. So I definitely need something to get higher up. Just not too sure about brands and power, still kinda new to radios.
Any literature suggestions on the subject to help me learn?

 

The best antenna you can get is a stainless steel 102" whip antenna. Can be had from Radio Shack for less than $25. However, you WILL have clearance issues and possible whip interactions you or people behind you may not appreciate. You'll have to tie down for sure.

I have an old Radio Shack single - sideband cb. With the 102" whip, I was able to talk to as far as Australia & Germany and all over the U.S. during the peak skip season. Google "cb single sideband" for more info. Why is that important? If I get stuck out in the middle of the desert (again), even a guy in Florida can call for help for you and relay your coordinates.

 

Christ, is that a CB or a VCR? It's huge.

 

Those are the type I've always seen everyone have, most of the reason I posted this thread was to see if I was going to have to find a place to mount a big monster. That little hand unit mentioned above will be perfect for me I think. If the range capabilities are what I'm reading that they are.
