The other side of the coin is you get 5 people all shouting bad directions. Pick one reliable spotter, and tell everyone else to STFU. LOL

One of the most important things when you are in a tight spot is to have a GOOD spotter. Then tell all the other guys to shut up! It is a real pain to have a bunch of different guys all yelling at you to go different directions when you are in a hairy spot.

You learn the most behind the wheel. Just like anything, practice makes perfect(ish). Know that your XJ can do more than you think. Sometimes you need to find a good wheeling buddy (aka the trustworthy dude who's not going to put you in a bad spot) to help push you into this fact. Something that helped me out a lot was studying video of the parks local to me on YouTube. If you live in a muddy area, watching people on slickrock does you no good. Join a club, meet new people, and go wheeling. Be safe, have fun, and enjoy the sport.

don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but keep the vehicle behind you in your rear view mirror. if you don't see him, stop and wait for them to catch up.
also, keep your music to a level only you can hear. we don't want to hear it.
always use 4 wheel drive as to keep wheel spin to a minimum. use 4lo on anything technical.
air down. people don't want to take all day cause your jeep is so bumpy over the smallest of rocks.

Get recovery gear as soon as you have the cash to buy it, because people get tired of wheeling with guys that never have any gear and are always needing someone else to come up with the straps and shackles to pull them out.

Once you have recovery gear, make sure to put it where you can get to it while you are wheeling.
Those d-rings and straps will do you NO good in your trunk if you get yourself into a situation where you can't open your trunk! (Trust me, I learned this the hard way! ) Now every time I go out, one shackle goes on the front bumper, one on the rear, the strap goes under the driver's seat and the winch controller goes under the front passenger seat! This way I can be ready to hook up in less than a minute!

advice is great and many good points here. and with time you will learn what works for you along with developing your own style. I cant stress enough about the tow points and the value of a good spotter. a good spotter who you have worked with before and can trust will be able to put you in spots and direct you out of that you never thought you could.
nothing better than the look on the guy in a toyota on 38s when you go through the same stuff on 33s
