I searched and found all this Info on the junkyard parts thread

Axles
1. Ford 8.8 inch ('97+) = need spring & shock mounts (3.55, 3.73, or 4.10, maybe LSD, Disc Brakes)
2. XJ I-4 & some V6 = may have 3.73, 4.10, or 4.56 gears may have vacuum discos
3. XJ C8.25 ('97+) = bolt in and upgrades to 29 spline (strength comparable to D44)
4. XJ D44 = found in some but not all '87-'89 XJ's with Towing Package
5. Lincoln Lockers = welded spider gears, operates like a spool, must be a GOOD welder
6. MJ D44 = need new spring perches and shock mounts
7. XJ D30 = ('95-'99) non-disconnect, larger u-joints, high pinion, bolt in
8. Homebrew posi-locks for '84-90 vacuum disconnect D30s, eliminates vacuum actuation (use search function)

And that helped a lot, as of now I am gonna be checking junk yards for a rear d44, but now I'm wondering about the front? I would really like d44s front and back, I wheel pretty hard but I also use it as a part time dd. I don't think my d30 or 8.25 would break for what I use them for, but I like knowing it won't break. So my question is, What year/trim/engine xjs (if any) come with a front d44?

the ONLY 44 front XJs made were special equipped venezuelan export models from like 87-89. the number was in the hundreds or less probably... back before the rubicon TJ in the mid 90s people tried to get them imported but it ended up being more than having currie or whatever build you one.

if you want a bolt in front 44, a TJ rubicon one would be more easily attainable... but still, good luck.

Skip the TJ 44. Yes it is a direct bolt in but it's not a true D44. It's a low pinion D30 with a D44 chunk. Unless you're beating the crap out of your rig and running 35s plus locked your D30/8.25 will be just fine.

this isnt true. I have seen many d30 break with 32's and 33's with a open carrier. d30 does have its purpose as a small suv front axle. that being said if you truss, install a full case locker, and get a good diff cover for deflection it can stand some abuse.

Hey my favorite person

If you're running a D30 with full circle clips/ ABS shafts/ locker/ gears and 35's and breaking it. You're doing something wrong

Yes you can break them, I've broken D60 shafts with 35s but it's not a common thing. The upgrades you listed will help but you left out the most important one if you're building an axle and that's shafts. The gears are plenty strong for what it is and the housing is fine as well. Shafts and u-joints, especially early models, are the weak link. But for 95% of the people wheeling an XJ the stock axles are fine.

I'll say! I've been running a stock long side D30 shaft from a 2000 TJ for as long as I've owned the jeep. locked, 35's, and a 760 with full circle clip. works ****

If your talking about a front axle most of that list is rears,Ford only used the 8.8 in the front as a ifs never a solid axle. The xj and mj had a dana 44 rear option never a front one but a super rare exported one.As a daily driver a welding the diff locked front or rear is not a good idea it will eat tires fast. How much lift do you have or want and what size tires you gonna use?

After seeing what everyone had to say ill probably just build up my d30 and 8.25 and be fine. I'm planning on a 4.5 inch long arm on 33s or 35s with 4.56 gears. I really don't wheel all that hard, but once and a while when I can't make it through something I back up and mash the skinny pedal and hear the motor rev to the moon. I was asking about stronger axles because of that, but the d30 is so easy to come by here and the 8.25 I can get all kinds of parts for. Ill make it work unless someone thinks I should upgrade?
