I submitted a how-to on installing gas hood struts today. Hopefully the moderators will deem it suitable.

My starter has been turning over slowly lately. Today it stopped completely. A couple thuds with a hammer allowed it to turn over at least one more time until I made it home. $135 later on RockAuto, I’ll have a new Remy at my door by Tuesday.

Finally after two years of looking at the volt meter gauge dancing around< I put the new one in yesterday. Now it shows the 14 volts that it should and steady with no jumping at all. Looked for the harness for the clock, but couldn't find anything, so looks like Ill have to figure out what to tap into at a later date.

Oil & filter change, worked wonders for oil pressure which I've not noticed before. As the oil's slightly thinner cold it must be the quality: Gulf, rather than supermarket own brand.

As just turned 150,000 miles, this is step one in a major tune-up which will be spread over a few weekends, when time & parts are available.

I now have keyless and remote start capability. A PO down the line installed a remote start kit probably in the late 2000’s but there were some cut wires under the dash by the module. No fobs were included when I bought this and no antenna module was in the vehicle. I just happened to find remnants of a kit on eBay that had extra remotes and even the brain module. After screwing around for a couple hours with trying to get the old module to operate, I actually installed the new module and antenna assembly and now everything works great. It’s so nice to have long-distance keyless remote and start capability.

Everybody is installing hood struts now! I'm honestly thinking about it too.

I question the longevity of hood struts. Do the parts seem quality?

Such a worthy upgrade for all of us who frequently mess with a XJ. I bought “made in USA” rods so I hope they last longer but who knows. I think mine are rated for 80lbs each.
I’m shocked how theses don’t come stock on Jeeps. I have a coworker who spent north of $120k on two Unlimited's last year and neither have gas hood struts.

I thought about it & while this is a nice, tidy installation, I can think of better ways of spending that sort of money, just to be rid of an anachronism. Happy to keep the old skool prop as part of the XJ's essential character.

Interesting that the KJ had struts, but Jeep seem to have reverted - perhaps it's a heritage thing.

Can you tell me where you bought your parts/kit? Made in USA is preferred because of quality and helping out fellow Americans.

I'm guessing Jeep didn't include hood struts because of cost cutting measures. The same reason the floorboards are made from such thin metal lol.

It only cost me $43.06 for both the struts and bases. Everything came from Amazon one day delivery.
