Unpacked last parts shipment from Rock Auto for the rear brake job. They shipped the last items in a white plastic shipping bag.

The silicone paste brake lube bottle got it's lid mashed and the contents leaked out over everything else in the bag. Bummer. Probably has enough left in bottle to do the rear brakes. If I need more, will stop in the local parts store. Everything else was protected with their own plastic bags. Applied for refund.

 

No noticeable differences pro or con that I can tell. I wasn't really expecting any as far as performance goes. I ran a K&N set up on and off for the past 4+ yrs. Seems when I ran it my idle was a bit rough. I'd switch back to the stock set up and it would smooth out. I found no advantage to the K&N anyways. As far as the finished product goes it's pretty much what he states in the video. The hood does hit some but it seems the duct is taking a permanent set maybe due to the heat so that it now seems the hood just lays on it. To be honest I think that mod should have been the way Jeep should have done it from the get go.

 

Shot some PB Blaster on rear brake cylinder bolt heads and line fittings, also on other end of rear axle brake line fittings to prep for rear brake surgery this weekend. Looks like it is going to be a longer job than I anticipated, since the POR-15 caliper paint I am using on backing plates and drums is supposed to dry overnight. If that 2 ton Harbor Freight trolley jack blows, it is going to take a little longer.

 

I pulled both driveshafts, sent the rear off with my buddy to be sandblasted. Chopped up some wood blocks to give me the height I need to support the tranny. I then snapped off three of the four bolts holding the transmission cross-member to the body through the spacers. I cursed a lot, questioned my sanity, cursed some more and basically had a good day. I'm trying to do a flex plate but it's my first time and she's not playing nice.

 

Finally got the tire swing on and adjusted. Mounted the spare and hi-lift. Spent some time at the hardware store to fix the made in china latch on the tire swing. Two nylon bushings and a washer fixed it. There was too much play causing it to hit the side and sometimes stick. Now to sit back and order more stuff.

 

Disassembled rear brake drums and shoes, first round of cleaning up. Was going to skip painting back plates and drums with black POR-15 caliper paint, but since I took tomorrow off to finish this will go ahead and do that too.

Have all the new parts inventoried and ready to finish this up tomorrow, I hope. Will be replacing fuel filter, rubber fuel lines, axle breather line, and installing stainless rear axle brake lines too.

I do have a question over in the technical discussion about the bolts for the rear brake tube clip. Do they go into through holes or blind holes?

 

Got a little dirty today out with a group today up at Rainbow Falls.

 

Rainbow falls is a great place to play. Last week we ran Schubarth loop. Snow was about two feet deep but a foot of it was undisturbed until we got there. Made for a long day but it was a blast.

 

Awhile back my driver's window stopped working. Figured today was a nice day so I would check it out.
The original regulator had what I believe to be that worm gear problem that when you kept your finger on the
button it tried to keep going up when already there.
The first Dorman Regulator lasted about 6 months. The Dorman I just took out about 6 years.
Well I had an extra one from some doors I bought awhile back. The motor in that works just like the original but
the regulator itself is more screwed up wanting to keep going both down and up with your finger on the button till
you release it.
So since the motors are what is crapping out on the regulators decided to see if I could swap a Mopar one, which says
Desno on it by the way, to the Dorman regulator.
No joy.
The spindle on the Dorman regulator that the gear sits on is smaller. Does not fit in the little cup in the white plastic.
Oh well get to warranty another.

 

Not today but this last weekend, installed a new Hayden 526 transmission cooler with a fan and new transmission lines. This thing is huge, probably 4 of the little ones I had in there for years. Turned my ashtray into a hidden switch pannel for the trans. fan and the auxiliary fan override and on board air. Put them in the ashtray mostly to keep my dogs off of them when they're in the jeep, and you close the lid to it and you would never know they are there. Ran all new wire, relays, fuses and packed all into wire looms so it looks like it came that way. Ran my relay for the aux fan override switch like bluemarkridge has a write up for and must say it works absolutely great. So a shout out to you Bluemarkridge and much props from me. I had mine before just wired normally through a relay. Got it all back together and doing great so far. It's ready for my moab trip next weekend

 

Nice! I'm going to eagle rock/syran wrap next weekend. Guess we will see how buried it still is.

 

Concluded Day 2 of rear brake job. Beginning Day 3 at dawn.

Inline Tube stainless steel lines are great.
I think I have become the most inept fitting starter anywhere.
Have discovered that Precision Tune can booger up a rear brake cylinder replacement and you won't find out about it for quite a while.
Discovered also that a Mobile station in Herndon, VA can install star adjusters in the wrong wheels and you can be unaware of it for decades.
An emergency brake lever (thingie?) that attaches to the end of the e brake cable in the drum assembly is easy to get off and impossible to get back on without divine intervention.

Rain forecast for tomorrow. Should have done this inside the garage.

 

Broke it and then fixed it.
I had the water pump and upper hose blow up on the way home from work, stayed up till 3 am to get them fixed.
Drove it for a week and then had the motor mount bolts shear off in the block.
Told someone I was thinking if a lift and got sent this this photo by my father while he was fixing the snapped off motor mount bolts in the block.
He had to Tig weld onto each bolt about 3-4 times each before they finally came out.
