Heard a knocking noise and pulled over to check it out, I figured it was a ujoint, went underneath, of course ujoint seemed a little loose which is strange cause I replaced both of them a year ago. So I figured i would keep driving to get home and fix it. As I drove, It started to get quieter, which I thought was strange, and then BANG front end dropped like half a foot, then BANG again, then I hear a bunch of grinding and my wheel flys off into the field. Literally a block from my house too.

so here's the real question... Did you drive it the block home?

yep, stuck the spare on and grabbed the extra lug nuts I had in the tool box and put the wheel on, and of course,,I did eventually find the wheel that flew off and put it on later. Once back at the house, I fixed the stud threads and put a new brake rotor on.

And this is why I use a torque wrench on my lug nuts and check them every other week. I lost a wheel on a fertilizer spreader once, the chemical kind not the natural type. I was was working for a chemical fertilizer company delivering the spreaders filled with 5 tons of product to farmers. Suddenly I was passed on the right by a wheel, by the time I figured out what it was the spreader tipped over spilling its contents in the ditch. The 5 hours I had to sit along side the road filling out hazmat paper work and the fact that I was delivering liquid ammonia nitrate the trip before put me in the habit of checking lug nuts.

My son and I was working on his XJ and I had him put his tire back on. I thought he knew how but, (what do they teach our kids in auto shop these days???) a few days later when we where driving home from Taco-Bell I heard some clattering I had him pull over and sure enough He didn't torque them on the ground. Now he knows!

yea, normally,mi definitely would. But the studs were surprisingly undamaged. I was literally able tighten the lug nuts by hand, and no they weren't stripped. Lol, and obviously I used lug wrench to torque them once hand tight.
