Meguiar's really makes excellent products. They gave samples to my club so we could hand them out at our last Meet & Greet, and I was so impressed that I actually cleaned one of my Jeeps for the first time ever. It's good stuff

Basslicks, I understand but, I believe if you use the correct product properly for your application, you would be amazed at how relatively easy the task can be. Even for a guy with little patience! Lol!
For you (or anyone else in a similar situation), I would recommend getting some Meguiar's Super Degreaser and start at the top of your engine/bay with the cleaning part of the task. When you see how well this stuff works, your confidence will go up and you'll be more likely to want to finish the task, even if in stages. An old toothbrush can come in handy, too. Follow the directions on the bottle.
And don't let the price of the product scare you. Remember, these are concentrates so you can dilute to the desired ratio. I'd say start with an 80/20 to really knock the old crud right off. You can always follow-up with a weaker solution on a 2nd cleaning if necessary.
Then, when you're satisfied with the level of cleanness, apply some Meguiar's Hyper Dressing and step back and smile at what you've accomplished!
There are many benefits to having the engine/bay clean and once the initial cleaning is done, the next time it's necessary/desired it's so much easier and less time-consuming. Good luck and let me know how it turns out!

Yes. The truth is, very few products meant for this type of job actually work the way we're led to believe. And fewer still actually do the job without destroying painted surfaces and certain types of metals, especially aluminum. Most of it is just marketing ploys and not-so-cheap in the long run prices (Gunk, etc.). For the money, I use Meg's every time.
Installed new NSS. Old one disintegrated upon removal.. Thanks rust. A disappointment cause new one didn't fix issue..
Removed battery/tray, intake,old ac lines/canister, PCM, front clip and moved horns to clean up rust and paint parts of engine bay.
Tore into headlight wiring harness while clip was off just to inspect. Glad there's a new harness on the way because lights are worse now. First no headlights but high beam indicator on dash would illuminate. Now one 1/2 shorted headlight and one the works. XD
After quick test drive did a little driveway flex.. Damn you short arms.

Yeah, my biggest concern with degreasers under the hood is deterioration to plastic components. Seeing as how every electrical connector in the engine compartment is plastic. Definitely will pick up some Meguiar's next payday. WalMart's got it, right?
