96's aren't all bad I love mine. I think the worst thing about them is the fuel pump issue though

Right now though I'm going "Blame droid" hunting.

Changed out instrument cluster to one with full gauges along with temp and oil sending units. Works great. Now I know it is running a little hot. Next will be thermostat.

52028186 from the dealer for best results.

That, and going back to the parts store to exchange your new '96 sensors for '97 sensors that'll fit. I've seen problems with that, but it's no reason not to own a '96

Did you try napa auto parts? They are the only place ill go too.other then a dealership.which thats my last resort.napa is pretty good with knowing there stuff. I have a 96 also
