Quote: I do have a Haynes manual, follow the instructions and put it all back together and it runs like crap. Basically the distributor wouldn't line up to begin with so we took the chain off and rotated the cam 180°. Exhaust smells like gas. And it barely starts.

Upper Bushings
Yesterday I replaced upper control arm bushings in record time. 15 minutes to get the old ones out and 10 to install new ones.
Not counting all the parts I removed to drop the axle...

More like what I did in the last week. Installed trailer hitch. Had to cut the exhaust back and add a new hanger. Added trailer lights on a 7 way connector and mounted in the bumper. And yesterday did a full tune up and changed the oil sending unit. While I had everything off I was able to clean up the that side of the motor pretty good. And also got bolts for my coil as the PO had it held on with zip ties.

Didn't notice till I got them out but it had 2 differed brands of wires and plugs in it. It smoothed out quite a bit with a bit better response and its actually allot quieter. That was actually the biggest difference. Next up is either the exhaust our going through the suspension and bushings haven't decided yet.

How can I modify the cam position sensor in the distributor so I can rotate the sensor slightly clockwise?

I wouldn't try that. I think all you have to do is index the distributor correctly.

Here's how:

yea don't modify the distributor - it's not adjustable for a reason.

Quote: If the carrier is still out, stick a rag firmly in one tube from inside the pumpkin. Use a long broom handle to push the rag through from the opposite tube and push all that gunk out, Repeat until clean.
I have also used a shop-vac (with diff cover removed to allow air flow) with the brush attachment.
I actually thought about that. Spraying the tubes with some brake cleaner from the inside and then swab the barrel..

Thanks for the tip..

I got stuck about 600 miles away from home. I had to replace my alternator because I didn't feel like bypassing the internal voltage regulator.

Quote: Why did you buy an upside down one?
I believe that means he owes more on it than it's worth

Avoid Being Upside-Down Again
Finally, here is some general advice on things you could do before you pursue your next car purchase:
  • Educate yourself on your credit score don't pay a higher interest rate than you need to.
  • Educate yourself on available interest rates in the marketplace before applying for a loan; know a good rate when you see one.
  • Do plenty of pricing research on available new car and trade-in values to get a good value on both transactions.
  • Match your loan to your expected ownership length of time; a longer loan will help keep monthly payments low, but chances are it will lead to being upside-down when the time comes to trade in for yet another new car.
